Is it wrong to call a Dagestani "Russian?"

Dagestan is its own country, but it's part of the Russian Federation. I understand that the Dagestani people are of a different ethnic group than "Russians." (Avar vs. Eastern Slav "Russian")

Yet I constantly hear Khabib referred to as "Russian," and it seems acceptable.

Anyone know more about this region, beyond what you read in Wikipedia? I really want to know how a Dagestani feels about being called "Russian," and if this is considered offensive or acceptable.

Pardon my American ignorance.

It should be up to the fighter. If Khabib doesn't like being called Russian I'm sure the UFC would change it. It's like people in Northern Ireland being called Irish or British in a way.

You call people their nationality and they are Russian in terms of Nationality.
Russia actually has a very diverse population. Even the so called Slavs are a diverse group.

Sherdog is not a worldly or scholarly bunch, it's probably better to use generalizations so to not confuse and upset the masses.

Funny you mention that, because I had a huge debate over whether it was OK to call someone from Northern Ireland "British."

Despite the fact that Northern Ireland is part of the U.K., and U.K. inhabitants are technically "British," I got the impression that you would never call an Irishman "British." I was really wondering if it was the same situation with Dagestan and Russia.

Yeah.. you get shot for that shit. I dated a girl that was born there...and you also NEVER talked about her mustache

Buahahahahh nice.

Khabib doesn't seem to mind it, though. I don't know if he just accepts that the rest of the world can't understand the complex geo-political clusterfuck that is Russia.

Most Protestant northern Irishmen do not consider themselves Irish in the traditional sense, and ethnically originate from Britain.

Catholics however..

My 5 minutes of Wikipedia research confirm this. 168 ethnic groups. Maddening.

Khabib has called himself Russian if I recall correctly, he certainly talks about being from Russia all the time. So there's your answer.

Interesting. While in that rabbit hole, I found out that a small percentage of the population of Northern Ireland actually does identify as "British." Same for Scotland and Wales.

Lets stand up for them before it becomes a problem. Let our cries become the problem. Who cares if Dagestan isn't offended, what about the rest of the world?? Can't we be offended for them?

Good point.

This about settles it. I'm sure that some arm chair geography professor will disagree, though.
