Is Colby really playing a gimmick?

From your OP I thought at first it was #1 but now I'm more inclined to believe it was #2. It's pretty obviously a hyped up gimmick he plays but he's actually a piece of shit too.

It's an interesting pattern in MMA that we've had three prominent heel characters (Chael, Colby and Strickland) and one failed but nearly successful attempt (Jacob Volkmann) that all emerged from awfully boring fighters trying to escape irrelevancy.

It seems there is a certain personality type that is self-aware enough to know their fighting style is unappealing and calculating enough to adopt an entire persona to compensate.

But it seems that someone willing to go to these extreme lengths has to be particularly narcissistic/borderline sociopathic in the first place, because this isn't acting or pro wrestling where fake and real are more easily delineated. You sacrifice more in terms of personal relationships and self-respect.

Basically, they are existing cunts who lean into the most cuntish aspects of their personalities as a gimmick and then end up becoming even bigger cunts as the gimmick takes over.

Probably a cool guy on the surface but deep down he's a scumbag. Plenty of those folks wandering around

He seems like a pleasant person when he's not on his schtick.
I'm sure he'd have more fans by behaving normally. Although, I do believe his MAGA act got him his title shots and that was his goal.
The stuff with the bikini "models" always comes off as a guy who isn't honestly interested in women. They're never very attractive and I don't think he realizes this.

He'd have zero fans if he was behaving normally, Americans are fucked in the head and you heard it from a professional

All of his former training partners dislike him so he's probably an asshole even outside of his character

Who knows if even that is true though.

Colby is so hated that anyone taking a stance against immediately gains fans.

Guys like Themba and Masvidal swore up and down that this guy was the best dude ever, helped them so much when they were struggling.

Masvidal even got a big payday just for fighting Colby.

Maybe Colby avoided Themba on stream so he didn’t have to drop character.

There have been plenty of times where Colby drops character and seems like a reasonable dude.

Colby is 10 years deep into his fake personality. It's what fans know him for and there's simply no going back now lol.

Enough of Colby real friends have turned against him and I interpret that as he's not playing a gimmick and being really him.

Him and Masdival were literally best friends at one point.
He was roommates with Jon Jones over a year.
Dustin can't stand him.
Hell all of ATT hates him except Woodley which is funny. Woodley still seems to be on good terms with him. I remember when the UFC stripped Colby and Woodley was on Jim Rome and said he felt bad for Colby and said what the UFC did wasn't right. Then after Colby beat him Woodley gave him his flowers

He was friends with Jon Jones. That's more damning about his character than anything he has said imo.

I've seen dissent on this. Some say he's playing a character and he's actually really nice.
Second opinion is that the early version of Colby we saw was fake and the current one is the real one, and not a shtick.
Idk. Guy has made so many enemies, of his old training partners even, that it makes me think he might actually be like that irl.
I doubt he's "in character" literally 24/7, even when the cameras are not rolling.

I think it's 100% real.

The guy is a completely unlikeable asshole.

He may be cool to fans who kiss his ass, but I GUARANTEE you that if you mentioned the word "Biden", Colby would start foaming at the mouth.

Hats off to Colby - he did what he had to to make his career work. There was also an element of risk in what he was doing and saying

Playing a gimmick? Yes.
Really nice person in real life? No idea.

It is a gimmick, but he kinda ruined his life by doing it. So many friends lost, lots of hate. Didn't he have to switch gyms too?

Like, sure he got a couple of high profile fights.. but was it worth it? He never won the title or anything.

He was never funny - just a jackass. I don't think he's smart enough to be clever, so he went for the low hanging fruit he knew would piss people off. It worked - but I am sure on his deathbed he will wish it went differently.

This is a strong post, especially with the User/Av combo.

They can end this thread right here, "thats a wrap son" <30><goldie>

He doesn't even seem to be genuinely political.

Was funny at the PI when he saw themba and then slowly creeping up the stairs, thinking Ian garry was there

Bingo! He went way over the top at "selling the fight" and no one likes him but maybe his closet boy toys.
