International India Facing Healthcare and Economic Disaster from Second Wave of COVID

It affects the younger more? So like 1918 flu the 2nd wave hit the youngsters harder.

"Dr Amit Thadhani, director of Niramaya hospital in Mumbai, which is only treating Covid patients, said he had given warnings about a virulent second wave back in February but they had gone ignored. He said now his hospital was “completely full and if a patient gets discharged, the bed is filled within minutes”. Ten days ago, the hospital ran out of oxygen, but alternative supplies were found just in time.

“There are people lined up outside the hospital trying to get in and every day we are getting calls every 30 seconds from someone trying to find a bed,” said Thadhani. “Most of these calls are for patients who are critically ill and do need hospital care but there just isn’t enough capacity and so there is a lot of mortality happening. Everyone has been stretched to their limit.”

Thadhani said this time round the virus was “much more aggressive and much more infectious” and was now predominately affecting young people. “Now it is people in their 20s and 30s who are coming in with very severe symptoms and there is a lot of mortality among young people,” he said."

Then by all means that strain must be prevented from leaving india.

Then by all means that strain must be prevented from leaving india.

Too late man:

"And a new and potentially concerning variant first identified in India late last year, known as B.1.617, has become dominant in the state of Maharashtra. B.1.617 has drawn attention because it contains two mutations that have been linked to increased transmissibility and an ability to evade immune protection. It has now been detected in 20 other countries." [Nature]

It always seems to be catch up with the virus; by the time a new variant has been sequenced, its already escaped to another country.

It's not good in India, but they also don't seem to be taking it that seriously. People I know there are very angry that the government was allowing cricket matches at full capacity, was holding in person elections, and by-and-large no one cares about masks or staying away from one another. Some have lost aunts, uncles, and grandparents. I also have one coworker who's gone missing for the past week+ after traveling to his mom's funeral.

This Indian paper says the Indian double mutant strain has been found in the UK, US, Germany, Singapore and Australia.

Below recent Japan Times articles say the Brazilian Covid death tolls are worse than India, but no one is paying attention to it.

The news reports say the new mutated strain is the cause. They were doing pretty good before.

Their outbreak occurred soon after Diwali when 10's of thousands flocked together without masks to celebrate one of India's most holy days.

India's epidemiological situation never made much sense TBH. they completely dodged the first waves like the virus was a nothingburger despite cramped conditions, but it could just be an artifact of poor data gathering and testing.

If their new variant out-competed the established ones, then we have to assume it has some sort of evolutionary advantage in that particular environment. Whether that advantage would work in other countries is another story. Afaik people are concerned because it has two amino acid alterations on the spike, but it's not the first and usually these turn out to be nothingburgers, with the vaccines working just as well. The surge could also just happen to be related to loosening of restrictions / behaviour, and nothing to do with the identification of a new variant (of which there are literal thousands).

The evolutionary advantage is that it has more S proteins than previous versions. The increase in S protein allows for much higher viral loads as more of the virus can latch onto the A1C receptors in the lungs. Higher viral loads are linked to worse cases. That is why most cities put limits on the amount of time you could spend indoors.

Ya, this new strain is a game-changer for people not immunized. It's affecting young people in ways the previous version did not. Granted the anti-COVID people will read this and assume it's propaganda by the government to force vaccines.

Holi was more recent. I’m thinking it was from that. Could be wrong.

You know you might be right. Is that the one where they go into the water in large groups with their favorite diety?

I just looked at the dates and their numbers started to spike 2 weeks before Holi so I am sure that it made a huge impact on the numbers.

Holi is the colours are thrown around. Powders. Paints etc.

This time of year, Delhi is very hot and humid. Does this impact the spread at all?

Once again Religulous people spread death.

That is one thing I agree about Bill Maher.

Buy this is not funny anymore.

So this strain is not only more infectious but more deadly?

Is Covid now worst than the 1918 flo?

So its only a matter of time before there is another surge in other countries hopefully the vacine currently in circulation still works.

U.S. is at 580k deaths, China is below 5k. India should clearly be following China’s inspiring lead in dealing with the pandemic.

Good thing Toronto Canada is letting in hundreds of flights a month from India!

Even though the city is locked-down!

Good thing canada finally ban flights to india ffor 30 days, no need for pointless fourth wave because of these uneducation people
