I decided I needed a break. I took three days off because honestly I needed it. Yesterday i decided "fuck it I'm going to New Orleans" and everything just fell into place , got someone to cover an extra shift, friend is driving me and dropping me off and picking me up on Sunday.

So! Anyone ever been?! I'm taking my resume down there too, there's a restaurant opening in the French quarter hiring kitchen managers I'm really qualified for (pizzeria)

I'm really excited to wander around a new city alone and think this will be a good step for me.

It's kind of boring and a little sketchy there

I went back in summer of 2004 (a year before Katrina).

Some places (French Quarter maybe?) smelled like urine.

The homeless people were pretty aggressive.

TBH, I wasn't all that impressed. But don't let that deter you from having fun. Just my opinion.

Well this is basically a food vacation for me. Any recommendations there? So many restaurants. If I enjoy this vacation I'll probably move down there for a year, just cook and eat as much as possible.

TBH, I don't remember the names of a lot of places that we went, as it was over 10 years ago. You should probably hit up TripAdvisor.

I remember eating at some popular fried seafood (po-boys, etc) place. Kind of a hole in the wall. It was good. Maybe it was Johnny's?

Of course, most will say that you need to go to Cafe du Monde for beignets, get a muffaleta, etc.

Have fun!

There's good food, but you have to deal with New Orleans to eat it.

You can find good find everywhere there, so just enjoy the sights and eat when you see a place that seems good.

Edit: panhandlers are at an all-time high right now so be careful

I've done it a couple times, good town for eating and whoring, lots of live music too, but it's not all that great.

Chargrilled oysters at acme oysters or the place across the street if there's a line. Crab beignets at R'evolution Bar, Po boys everywhere, shrimp and grits everywhere, the food is great.

Bourbon street is a disgusting shit hole, but you'll want to visit for an hour or so. Similarly, Frenchman street but less seedy. I really liked the ww2 museum, but I'm a bit lame.

Tourists perspective, anyway.

I must be the only one that enjoys New Orleans - friendly people and awesome food.

Acme was pretty good for oysters. There's like a jazz club in French quarter , I'm not into music but it was fun seeing the culture.

Airboat was fun for seeing the alligators. Tell the local girls you're from LA and you'll score for sure. It was so easy that I was afraid I was getting scammed.

Cool bro story: shaq was on the same flight when I was leaving. Very cool cat and didn't want vip treatment from airline - instead took pics with everyone.

Any tips for avoiding panhandlers? When I was in Tijuana I just wore sunglasses and had headphones in. Just pretended I didn't hear or see anyone.

Also what's with no one liking New Orleans in here? Everyone I know that's been says it's magical.

You will have the most memorable time if you do these three things.
1. Empty your back account in cash and keep it in your pocket.
2. Get fucked up, out of your mind drunk, then:
3. Walk around New Orleans on side streets (staying off main streets) all by yourself.

Bourbon street is like a poor man's Vegas. It's a lot of fun if you like to party.

If somebody yells at you from across the street "got a light?" Ignore them.

A lot of the appeal of New Orleans is debauchery, too much food, drink, banging strippers, whatever. It's like Vegas, you'll have fun, but you don't want to be the guy talking up his time there, that shit's just unseemly.

I love New Orleans. Always have an awesome time.

The only negative is the guy/girl ration. Since it's complete and cheap debauchery, it attracts a lot more dudes.

I lived there, so maybe I'm jaded. It's a cool city, don't get me wrong, but there are a lot of issues that make being there long-term a nightmare. It's cool for a weekend though.

About the panhandlers, they'll be dressed in anything from nice suits to rags and they'll have signs asking for money or they'll do it verbally. They're all over the quarter and at almost every major intersection throughout the city. Lots of stories go around about people taking out their wallets to hand them some cash, only for the panhandler to snatch the wallet form them and take off. Don't acknowledge them.
