I'm Gonna Get a Cat, Any Advice?

I'm gonna get a cat, I'd love a dog too but don't have the schedule for it.

I need a cat that's quiet, low-energy, non-destructive, friendly, tolerant, and hypoallergenic.

I'm going to a couple of shelters tomorrow to see what they have, I'll be patient since I know I have a long requirement list. I might end up needing to get a specific breed and visit a breeder but I'd like to try and find a shelter kitty first.

I'm figuring that I should get a cat that's a few years old so their personality will be evident.

Any advice?

Enjoy. Hope you get a great one and give it all the love it deserves. I'm sure you'll be an excellent owner VV!

Why hypo-allergenic?

If you are at all allergic simply don't, if you have a friend who is consider how often you want that friend to come over.

Instead of buying the usual gritty, toxic, ineffective litter, look into those pellet heater wood pellets. They're cheaper by volume I believe and they're better for you and the cat in multiple ways...

Do you actually need a "hypoallergenic" cat?

Most of the breeds described as hypoallergenic are also described as energetic.

Do not get a shelter animal as a first pet. Pets end up in a shelter after some unpleasant events. it is a lottery, and an inexperienced owner may get a handful.
Get a ragdoll breed kitten. They tick all the boxes except allergies - I have no idea how allergy-inducing they are, but you can google it.

My advice is love it unconditionally.
Find one from a litter if possible, you get a better sense of who they are as individuals.

R.I.P to my little Killer...17 years of awesomeness.
She was always working with me, whether it was painting, carving...she was always up for it....and always on my shoulder.
I went in the chicken coop with her on my shoulder, walked to the store etc.
She was my best friend for sure.

Love ya, you're missed little lady.

Great post SL. Killer pix shared of a big portion of life with your kitty. :)

It's been proven time after time that people sharing a bond with animals are happier and healthier than those that don't.

I think I was her pet to be honest, I just had the illusion of control sir lol.
She was the best, and very vocal which I loved about her.

She's buried in my yard and I planted flowers all over her because I wanted to honor her.
She had cancer at the end...I fuckin hate cancer, it took my 2 favorite people (my grandmother and my little Killy Dilly) :(

Adopt an elderly man instead. They are no work and have great anecdotes unlike cats who have none. Sometimes they get riled up if you leave the news on but you can calm them down with some nuts.

And if you get bored you can strap them to a chair and fling pudding at them sir lol.

My last cat used to do that, but her favourite was jumping on my feet the second I stepped out of the shower dripping wet. Like she would pounce at the moment of max vulnerability.

My brother had a cat that he taught how to hide around the refrigerator and when you went to the bathroom he'd jump out at you... little fucker lol.
