I'm Gonna Get a Cat, Any Advice?

Shake food in box when giving it, the shaking noise will lure it to you.
Shake treats in plastic container - treats making a different noise helps.

Cats like to perch above the floor to scope out stuff - around your eye level in a chair or on the couch or higher.

Get a combo climbing/scratching post. A carpet covered 4x4 on a solid base works as a start or you can just buy one.

Get plenty of small flashy toys to play with. A wind up cruising mouse is cool.

A feather or knotted yarn on a stick/fishing pole dangled with a string works well.

Lucky…

When I got my cat he would try to sit on my lap and sleep on me when I was sleeping.. I kept moving him off and that caused him not to ever be a lap cat.. he just sits next to me .
They remember stuff like that.. so if u want lap cat don’t do that.

You can figure out if it's friendly and tolerant quickly but idk how you will know it's energy level or destructiveness. Cats aren't robots man. They can change overtime just like any of us animals. I had a cat (rip) who became super stressed out later in life and started destroying everything in my house.

You get what you get when it comes to cats. They are individuals.

That . You can see one , think it's adorable and it turns out to be a right twat .

Also , they make the rules regards affection , it might come to you or might not. We have 3 , all very different personalities. I got lucky last night, our least affectionate cat decided she wanted to sleep with me and stayed on the bed next to me until 6am. Whereas our youngest I can just ask her if she wants a cuddle and she is up onto you like a shot.

You may never take another shower or shit unobserved lol
Lol , if you leave the door open our three operate in different ways.

1. Comes in and yells at you for something but doesn't know what she wants.

2. The least affectionate sits and stares until you get up and follow her to what she wants.

3. The youngest and most affectionate sits on her back legs and touches you with her front paws until you say 'ok' then she immediately jumps on your leg and cuddles.

From my experience male cats I've had have tended to keep to themselves most of the time. They want less attention. Tend to eat less food. They have been strong believers in stranger danger as I joke with others.

Female cats we have had are more lovable. They want to be around people more. They have also been more demanding with attention. They want to be brushed, their cheeks in particular. They have an early breakfast schedule to meet. If their demands are not met, items will be broken around the house.

Nice one, I got my cat when he was 6 weeks old, he was a street kid, he’s become such an important person in my life, he’s so affectionate he loves me to pick him up and carry him around the house, he lies on me, he’s a real scaredy cat though, as soon as someone comes to the door he’s hiding under the bed, he freaks right out lol
Good luck on your search and for giving an unwanted cat a home

As times passed I've gotten the impression black cats are less likely to be negative sterotypes. Like 3/4s of the time theres a well behaved cat or a cat with an interesting personality I see online its black.

So true lol, my cat gets me to follow him to the kitchen and then rolls onto his back and I have to scratch his belly until he’s had enough

Get a female if you want a laidback cat. Males are rambunctious and like to play. They will run around destroying your shit.

I've also found females are more hunter-like compared to males. If you get a mouse or some shit the female will kill it.
I've had two male & three female cats over time. The male cats seem to be snobby a lot whereas the females are more chilled out & affectionate. If I got another cat, it would be an older female.
