If you had to pick one exercise to train a young athlete

KB Swings

Builds strength
Builds power
Builds speed
Full-body (if done correctly)
Low risk of injury if done incorrectly*

*not if you hit yourself like a dumbass
I found kids use too much back during KB swings. Gotta teach proper hinging mechanics first.

If you had to pick one exercise to train a young athlete, what would it be?

I would say sprints at a distance that they can cover in about 5 seconds or so

It builds overall explosiveness

Loaded carry variations

If it's kickboxing and boxing orientated then heavybag.

Just for athlecism maybe swimming.

Depends on the goals.

Running is also very healthy but I hate it. Feels like a chore.

For grappling I would pick rolling.

Swimming.

Picking one specific muscle-building exercise is terrible. Muscular imbalances can wreck you.

If you only do push-ups you're going to walk around like Gegard Mousasi who's like a human-camel.

Running if you class that as an exercise. Builds bone density, builds lower body strength, great for the cardio-respiratory system, great for weight control, most popular sports invlove running so will give a solid base.

If you meant a strength exercise then pull ups. Builds grip, good for posture, safe exercise, good for coordination etc.
