Masks should be fine for LEO. But they should all have id and badge numbers prominently displayed. The personal information for whom the numbers correspond with can remain private, but we need a way to track the behaviors of these people we entrust to literally be above the law.

Citizens have a right to privacy. Law enforcement who have a monopoly on state violence and answer to citizens do not have a right to privacy.

This is incredibly basic civil rights in a democracy stuff.

That might help but badge numbers are already public. A lot of the reason to avoid masks is just basic human trust of law enforcement; conversely, you don't want law enforcement feeling they are anonymous when doing routine policing, it's a perverse incentive.

Who cares? Triple their budget.

The $$$ they save American taxpayers that no longer have to pick up illegal aliens' costs for prisons, hospitals, education, infrastructure, and more vastly outweighs the government spend. Also, as the success of the Trump border policy continues, less and less and less are coming in illegally also greatly reducing future infrastructure costs and enforcement costs. It will get cheaper and cheaper over time with a blip at the start (where we are now).
