I miss the good old days

As a little Australian kid i loved the movie bloodsport, i loved the characters and the different fighting styles, loved seeing them face each other and then seeing how it could play out.. it was a movie i would watch weekly and i always wished it was real then, many years later i heard about the UFC. It wasn't something readily avaliable in Australia to watch so i would put on my pirate hat and would watch it alone around midnight as that's when it generally would be uploaded, it was like a guilty pleasure of mine as it was kind of taboo. I wouldn't have to worry about spoilers as it was spammed on socials seconds after there was a finish.

I miss the the evolution, the unpolished product where funny / random shit will happen.. i miss fighters not being scared of being cancelled and being true to themselves. Now it feels like we have a bunch of copycats, and the evolution has slowed right down, where the last innovation was the calf kick.

I feel like it's almost all been done now, we have been spoilt and we've seen most of the storylines playout and now it doesn't feel the same.

What i miss the most is those nerves before a big fight and little shakes i used to get before a massive fight where you know how ever this end it's going to be massive and sherdog would most likely crash.

I hear you bro, but I will say that I got that feeling more for Poatan vs Ank than I have in a while, and I'm sure I'll have them for DDP vs Khamzat.

All days are different. The product isn't without the same appeal, it just might have more or less of those events, but it's how you connect to them

He backtracked since
You can't backtrack from that. The problem wasn't just admiring Hitler, it was  agreeing with him. You can't just turn around and go "Oh sorry, that's not really what I meant when I said 'the greedy jews needed to be removed from the country because they were using books to queer up the kids.' There's either actually a problem reasonable explanation as to why I believe that, or I'mgoing to try and convince you i don't actually believe that, despite saying it.."

You cant expect to maintain your level of enthusiasm for something after it isnt fresh and new before.

There's no way I am going to be as OBSESSED as I was when I first started watching, those earlier years.

But I still love it, and dont "miss" the old days, cos I can watch old events any time I want npw.

People dont seem to realize they get older and change too, they just blame everything else around them instead lol
It's very obvious this is the case. It's common in general, but on a message board filled with middle aged people, they're likely oblivious that it isn't 2006 anymore.

Most of the things MMA is criticized about today applied to before. Every week some guy says things aren't the same, as if them being 17 years old at the time they're recalling the sport has nothing to do with it.

You're just not as invested as you once were. It sometimes happens.

I feel ya, its not the same anymore. I miss so much when we had UFC, Pride and WEC cards within a 2 week span!! it was amazing and so much fun, the hype and energy and buzz was incredible. MMA was booming at that time and the excitement was through the roof. Now we get tons of UFC Apex cards in an empty, soulless, lonely and sad looking little converted gym. Zero energy, zero atmosphere, its totally flat, its really sad to see, never thought I'd see MMA that way, its a high energy sport, it needs real humans there and lots of energy and excitement.

It sounds like an aging thing tbh. We see a lot of the same and become tired of patterns. It might be for the best to step away for a while and keep life fresh

I hear you that apex sucks, some of our champs are unpallitable. The Saturday grind is tough. But great fights always happen and are worth timeless attention. Just don't let it overthrow your life

And fighters are as vulgar now more than ever

There's still a few karate based guys in the standup. Borralho, Ruffy, Icaro Brito out of fighting nerds alone.
Thanks bro. Do You know if they hold legit Karate belts tho?

Don’t we all son don’t we all. I recommend investing in burn cream as we are all on the road to hell.

Hidden qualifiers? Literally could only name one guy, and it was some body I never even heard of. Literally a regional guy.

How can we say it's a problem when it hardly happens in MMA?

I never said it was a problem, just that it has happened despite how much Daner beats his chest about "free speech."

There's an entire thread here listing fighters who were cancelled for various things outside of fighting.

What fighters have been cancelled?

Roman Bogatov got tossed from the UFC because one of his corner had a swastika tattoo or something similar. There was another guy scheduled to debut awhile ago, can't remember his name, but he got booted before he even got to fight because he had a similar tattoo.

Yeah I miss when I used to have pre fight nerves and spend the whole week watching all the interviews and embedded series and going out to watch the fight live at bars.
I think if you are a fan of a sport for long enough you will eventually get tired of it, also maybe because the sport is not like it used to be or whatever reason.
Man the mid 2010's was a wildly awesome time for MMA. I was the same way, fight week was something special it had perfect amount of ESPN coverage, media row, embedded videos, press conferences that built up the anticipation right before weigh ins we were at a fever pitch ready for that saturday evening. The jitters were real. You could be planning a bbq, going to one, hitting up the bar knowing its gonna be packed but it was our superbowl every saturday when that ppv came on.

The production and effort has not been there post covid its sad

The sport obviously peaked in the 00s and very early 2010s. Theres nothing that can really be done about it. It was inevitable that 1) on a technical level the skillsets would plateau eventually and reach an overall level where you would get relatively homogenized skillsets and lots of decisions and 2) it would become oversaturated and corporatized once it went mainstream.

Its still fighting in a cage with very few rules at the end of the day though, so its fun.
I think the peak and decline started around 2017ish but the 2020s have killed the aura. Sure we get amazing fights like always but the product or brand name is lacking that shine
