It seems to me that I am hearing more and more and more of these stories - people just quietly getting out without repercussions at the local level.
Don't get me wrong, Scientology is still as dangerous as ever. Willhaven's experiences show us that the organization can still afford to send staff and private investigators out to harass people who are high-profile(and yes, the internet is high-profile for Scientology - it is their Waterloo, their Custer's Last Stand, and they know it) but I suspect that out in the smaller Orgs, things are disintegrating rapidly and a lot of staff are being exposed to the truth via the efforts of Anonymous, Ex-Scientology Kids and other websites. People are leaving and those who haven't sacked up and left yet are neglecting to report the exodus "up-lines".
This is just a wild stab in the dark, but my gut tells me more people are "blowing" than the high command is aware of. And even if they know, they just don't have the manpower to harass everybody.
So Polyhedron, if your family is managing to get out without disconnection or harassment, you should thank the high-profile protesters and defectors, the people who are bearing the brunt of the CoS's attention right now. They are drawing the church's fire so others can safely distance themselves from this vile organization.
