I almost won the lotto

No, not to winning the lottery. That's not how it works. Same principle if they were random symbols, they are either right or wrong.

But they are not random symbols, they have a numerical value, they follow a numerical order.
If they were non-numerical symbols but I chose the symbols that were positionally close to the correct symbols you could also say I was close.
It’s a matter of proximity.

My finger was right next to the number 52 when I clicked on 51, if I would have moved it over a fraction of an inch to the right I would have won $7.
My overall selection was 1 digit off to the $7 prize. Less closer to the next prize, and so on ultimately being the least close to the grand prize.

If you guess 5 numbers right but get the powerball wrong, you could say you were very close to winning the jackpot.

Not sure there is anything to debate.

Because each number has equal probability of appearing. So being one off isn't different than being 50 off, since each has the same probability. I mean you can think 21 and 22 are close in a lottery system, but they are statistically the same as a 1 and a 50. It's either right, or wrong..

Close would be getting 4 numbers correct and missing the last.

My brother got 4 numbers on the UK lotto last year, only got him like 200 or so quid I believe. If he had just one more number, he would have won like 500k. And obviously if he had that number and bonus number, jackpot.

I think if you get 4 numbers, you should get way more than a measly 100 to 200 quid. The chances of hitting 4 numbers is rare, let alone all of them. He was gutted.

All of the prizes are disproportionately small compared to the odds. That is until the jackpot rolls over to $600,000,000 or so. Although of course you get less after taxes so it would have to be like $1.2B for your payout to reflect the 1/300,000,00 odds of winning, and only if you take the annual payments.
