The people as a whole simply stopped paying attention to him, because his schtick got old.

But he had a lot of people in the industry "boycotting" him and was getting a ton of bad publicity. He caved in and tried to play it off as just being a character. He lost all his fans overnight. Howard Stern even said Andrew Dice Clay has no material (back when they had beef) because he literally had no material. If you ever saw the Gene Simmons roast, it's painful to watch. He stunk up the joint.

But there were definitely a lot of holier-than-thou celebrities, tabloids, and other Hollywood scum that helped speed up the process of ending his 15 minutes of fame.
