How Yoel Romero won - Full Breakdown

giphy.gif

Important moment. 3 strikes that all connect?

No, only the last strike of this attempted flurry made enough of an impact to count as "significant".

giphy.gif

The first is clearly deflected down onto Adesanya's chest with all of its energy dissipated by the double deflection on the way in. For the second Romero is off balance, one leg in the air and defeated by the angle - if it even touches Adesanya it lands with very little impact. Even the third mostly lands on the top of Adesanya's chest, barely grazing the chin on the way down and as with the second, is thrown while Romero is off balance, defeated by the angle.

Romero's reaction clearly reflects his frustration that he couldn't find Adesanya like he hoped to, even in the pocket.

Not a particularly useful moment to hinge the round on at all.

He steps on Izzys right foot and falls.

Yoel did lose but it was still a pee pee performance by Israel and they should do the thing they did with Anderson and force him to fight a LHW as punishment... only don’t pick somebody he will jobber stomp like forest or James irvin. Give him ... Jon? Oh wait .. hmm.. or take him up on his bluff and force him to fight a HW?

Yoel had way too much energy to spare. A shame really, israel was so scared of him.

SCORE ROUND 5
Sal D'Amato - Israel Adesanya - 10-9 (Yoel 47-48 Israel)
Chris Lee - Israel Adesanya - 10-9 (Yoel 46-49 Israel)
Ron McCarthy - Israel Adesanya - 10-9 (Yoel 47-48 Israel)
Me - Yoel Romero - 10-9 (Yoel 48-47 Israel)

Last round was the easiest to score if you ask me.
And there you have it. The new champion Yoel Romero.

Israel kept kicking Yoel's legs, but Yoel kept hitting Israels face. I've tried to keep as many of the strikes in so you can see them for yourself. The only ones omitted are the ones that did not connect. Lastly to note; I'm not a fan of either fighter. MW hasn't really grabbed my attention, if I were to chose a fighter to root for it would be Hermansson. But it is an interesting exercise into how fights are judged vs how they are supposed to be judged.

Yes, this was too long to read, bro.

Very good post, I like how you started with a discussion of the rules themselves.

It's clear to me that Romero won. The judges were just protecting the champion here as they usually do. In boxing and MMA, protecting the champ has always been good for business and arguably good for the sport.

It's kind of BS, but sometimes as a fan it works in your favor and sometimes it works against you.

Agree
Yoel 1,2,5

giphy.gif

Similar to the super slow spin in the first round. Here Israel is trying to bait Yoel, who doesn't attack. Israel then scores yet another nice leg kick.

This one looks like more of a kick to the ass than the leg.

Biggest mistake here. Attempt to strike instead of securing the take down.
Khabib would have locked and neutralized Israel's both legs.

I gave Yoel the 1st two rounds. Last round was fairly close, but Yoel whiffed a bunch. If he had landed a couple hard shots, it was his to win. It's definitely within the realm of possibility to give him the round.

both performed garbage, ROMERO lost it though if he was aggressive he most likely could of murk a scared Adeysana

I have not seen a guy so reluctant to fight since Kalib Starnes ran away from Nate Quarry. Your “winner” should be banned from the UFC for not fighting.

Yes, this was too long to read, bro.

Those last 3 shots didn’t land. And even then they did essentially the same amount of damage to each other which is none. This is when you go to the SECONDARY criteria and Israel is clearly the aggressor.

Yoel won the fight by scoring effectively in his blitzes and shutting Israel down offensively.

Are you in law school?

@Kell Martin Idk, to me it was clear that Israel took the last round, as Israel's leg kicks were better than the strikes Yoel has landed in that round overall.

Much of the stuff Yoel threw didn't really land in that round.

Respect for the long breakdown though.

EDIT: Out of the three strikes that at first seemed to land on Adesanya in that flurry towards the end, Yoel only really connected with the last of three strikes:

giphy.gif

Yes only the hook landed. Izzy also landed a hook In that exchange which isnt pointed out. Quite a few of the supposed shots Romero landed in the gifs didn't quite land either. And counting head kicks that landed as blocked, even though you can see they landed through the hands should still count. The only way you give Romero these rounds is by being biased in his favour.

Khabib would have locked and neutralized Israel's both legs.

You can't maintain all that muscle mass and wrestle AND be explosive AND not gas out completely.

He has gotten to the top of the division being the explosive guy knocking people out after conserving energy.

He is over 40, the guy is who he is and isn't going to change. I think he won his last 2 fights, but judging is biased towards champions.

To me, only one of the two fought afraid. Izzy may have won but his stock sunk and eventually he’ll lose and whine and cry like a baby

Yeah echo most of the others in saying this was a ridiculously well put together post, one of the best breakdowns i've read on Sherdog. Please do more.. Pretty much agree with everything but still a little uncertain as to whether some of the rounds were so close that the octagon control should be further analysed.
10/10

Where do the rules mention the number of strikes?

The new rules are here https://www.mmafighting.com/2018/11...-mma-but-not-same-grounded-fighter-definition but there's no mention of 14 vs 12 mattering at all.
Effective striking is not a numbers game or that would be what the rules say and they'd get rid of judges and just use Compustats or something similar which despite it's name is just people looking at a fight and giving an opinion on whether a strike landed and how hard it landed. It's weird that in a fight like this the judges are wrong but the people who give an opinion on the strikes are right.

e. Effective striking is judged by determining the impact/effect of legal strikes landed
by a contestant solely based on the results of such legal strikes. Effective
grappling is assessed by the successful executions and impactful/effective
result(s) coming from: takedown(s), submission attempt(s), achieving an
advantageous position(s) and reversal(s).

2. Impact: A judge shall assess if a fighter impacts their opponent significantly in the round,
even though they may not have dominated the action. Impact includes visible evidence such as
swelling and lacerations. Impact shall also be assessed when a fighter’s actions, using striking
and/or grappling, lead to a diminishing of their opponent’s energy, confidence, abilities and
spirit. All of these come as a direct result of impact. When a fighter is impacted by strikes, by
lack of control and/or ability, this can create defining moments in the round and shall be
assessed with great value.
your rd 5 analysis mentioned nothing about the effective striking numbers, I based my analysis off the striking numbers you orovided.
