How would you compare Carpenter with Kubrick as directors?

They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, and especially The Thing are some of my favorite movies. Campy? Yes, but that's part of their charm. I'm someone who thinks Vampire's Kiss with Nicholas Cage is a masterpiece, after all.

Kubrick was a perfectionist, to the point of obsession in his later life. Which is why he only made 2 movies during the last 20 or so years of his life. Kubrick was a true artist, no doubt, and I get that people think he's more sophisticated because of his peregrinations, but it doesn't always work.

Sometimes I like to listen to Chopin's nocturnes and sometimes I want to listen to Ace of Spades by Motorhead, ya know?

Big Trouble in Little China was easily my favorite movie as a kid. But its not a great film by any objective measure.

They have such vastly different approaches and goals in filmmaking it's asinine to try and compare the two.

Idk. I like both a lot.

Carpenter seems like he does more with less budget. Kubrick’s stuff is always so polished that I just assume he has more money to spend on his projects.

Can't say I've ever heard Kubrick being described as "flashy".

Anyways, depends on what you're looking for in a movie. They both have their strengths, but I couldn't see Kubrick directing any of the dogshit that Carpenter has. He's got some classics, but a big old shit heap of garbage as well.

When Kubrick made a movie, it's because he wanted to. Carpenter can be a bit of whore, but his good ones are really good.

most Kubrick films are masterpiece fails. Clockwork Orange sucks, the Shining is all visuals.

Eyes Wide Shut has pathetic dialogue and is boring
The fck outta here. Clockwork is genius cinema. Are we actually comparing Kubrick to Carpenter????

Only on Sherdog... where T2 ranks higher than Godfather and Rocky 4 is the goat Rocky movie.

Home of the cinema elite!!

Dr. Strangelove is my favorite Kubrick movie.
The Thing is my favorite Carpenter movie.
Kk, byeeee!

I wouldn't call that anymore "flashy" than a whole bunch of scenes from "The Thing".

I guess there's really not a set definition and I can sort of see where you're coming from, but "flashy" to me is more of a "cool" editing style, usually reserved for blockbuster action flicks. Michael Bay and Zack Snyder are "flashy". I wouldn't describe either of these guys as such.

This is a ridiculous statement. Being as universally loved as it is makes it great by the most important measure available, do people actually enjoy it and want to watch it, repeatedly even. What good is a technical masterpiece of a movie if no one wants to watch it?

Russels side kick is lame and not even a martial artist. They should have went all the way and hired a legit martial artist and really expanded on him kicking ass. Now they had to cheat everything and hide the fact that it wasnt Dennis. Could have used Simon or Philip Rhee. The movie would have been awesome.
The martial arts content was cut short from the fact that they didnt get a legit guy.
