How would prime usman do in today's 170

Prime Hendricks would put Usman’s lights out. Prime PigRigg was a beast.
Yup and someone just replied to me and said he wouldn’t even be top 10 lol. Pre USADA Johnny arguably beat GSP. He had high level wrestling, one punch power and was very big and strong for the division. I think he would have been a really bad matchup for Islam in his prime. People forget he was a championship level fighter at his peak.

He could be champ with the right road to the title, but he isn't having any long reign like in his era. There are no LW journeymen being top 5 and getting multiple title shots in today's loaded division, or the likes of Nate Diaz and Michael Chiesa being top 10 ranked. LWs would just get off their diet and get ranked at WW in that last era. Cowboy went on a big run, was top ranked, past prime RDA arguably beat Colby and likely would have beaten Woodley. Dudes like Yancy Medeiros were getting ranked at WW in that weak era <36>

Makhachev
Shavkat
Morales
JDM
Belal
Brady
Garry
Prates
Leon
Kamaru
Amosov
Buckley
Bonfim

vs

Kamaru
Colby
Burns
Masvidal
Woodley
Leon
Wonderboy
Maia
Luque
Chiesa
Nate
Magny
Geoff
Jingliang
Ponzi

It's a whole different ball game. Usman would have had multiple losses. The division is significantly better, and hadn't been this great since the mid-2010s.

It's not like he's some old Pride guy you have to dig up and place into the modern MMA scene, he was just champ like 3 years ago and fought the current MW champ 2 years ago.

Islam beats him, Garry would beat him more often than not, Shavkat would be a 50/50 fight, JDM would have a chance, and he beats the others.

How does he beat belal?

Hendricks could hit as hard as anyone currently at 170 and had very solid wrestling when he wanted to use it. He had two 5-round fights with Lawler where he displayed pretty diverse striking for a wrestler as well.

Recency bias is a thing here.
“He’s not even top 10 today” tells us all we need to know lol. Prime Hendricks was a destroyer too. Crazy how far he fell off.

I think Usman would still be champ in his prime today too. I think that Leon KO was a fluke that wouldn’t happen 9/10 other times. Islam is good but i think he’s a little step down from some of the truly elite WW’s from the past. We will see, i could be wrong

loses to Islam
close fight with Jdm
llikely losses to Morales (He's just blown through everyone so hard to tell)
Garry losses to garry
Prates losses to prates
beats edwards
beats brady
beats Belal
losses to Shavkat

Usman could be a nightmare for Islam. Big and strong for the weightclass and had amongst the very best TDD in the UFC throughout his career, I don't see anyone at WW ragdolling him and holding him down like Islam is used to doing.

High output, punches with power, endless cardio, and not easy to get him to move backwards.

Beats all but Shavkat, has lots of trouble with Brady and Garry

I agree about that the Shavkat part and probably Garry part too but not so much the Brady. Islam is a really tough fight as well but I think he would win a decision.

Colby will get way undervalued in this thread because of how bad he is lately, but I think prime Colby at least wins the favorable matchups like JDM.

The Hendricks that went toe to toe with GSP would. High level wrestling, legit one punch KO, tough, special supplements and big for the division.

He was an undicplined mess but at his peak, he was a championship level fighter. At his low, he was fat and getting knocked out by gay pornstars though

Idk man, I think juicy Jonny was maybe the best welterweight ever.

Lol, nostalgia is hell of a drug.

First of all, Johnny was a fat midget comparing to modern WW’s. He has the height and reach of Ilia Topuria ffs. Guys like Morales, Shavkat, Prates, Garry would simply
dwarf him.

His wrestling was ok, he didn’t use too much though. Islam, Usman, Brady, Shavkat are much better wrestlers/grapplers than him.

His power is extremely overrated. He only has 5 KO/TKO wins in 21 UFC fights. Morales and Prates hit way harder than him. Most of his best performances are split decisions, lol.

His striking was ok but not nearly as good as Islam, JDM, Prates, Usman or Leon.

He would definitely lose to:

Islam
JDM
Garry
Shavkat
Morales
Belal
Prates
Brady
Usman
Leon

He might’ve beat Buckley or Bonfim, but I wouldn’t bet on that.

Most likely he beats the current form Colby and maybe Burns.

He definitely would have beaten Malot and D-Rod. Not even sure he beats Neal.

Likely the exact same as he did. Things ain’t changed that much except for fighters either getting exposed or again out.
To think that Kamaru is only two Champions out from Robbie Lawlers reign is pretty crazy.
I am currently watching Hendricks vs Robbie, and man those dudes were just as skilled as today’s guys while probably being tougher, and Roids don’t help technique it only helps output. These guys were already good, the difference with today’s guys is now the sport is old enough to where guys fight towards what they deem will be impressive to the judges as opposed to trying to win the fight or hurt their opponent. These guys incentives and ways to victory has changed.

He beats Brady and Belal on the feet for sure. Everyone else he loses too.

Islam grapples both of them easily.
No idea about Shavkat.
Morales & Prates might KTFO them, but most probably would get grappled.
Possibly; but Usman is a massive WW.
It’d be interesting to see.

Speaking of drugs, which ones led you to believe prime Hendricks would lose to current Edwards? Hendricks and many others from his era in their primes (Lawler, Wonderboy, Rory, etc.) beat the version of Leon who's shown up for his last few fights. Condit and Nick Diaz probably would as well.

Thanks for the laugh dude. The recency bias is insane. Go watch some 2011-2014 Hendricks PLEASE. We’re not going to let you off this easy.

Tonight’s homework is to watch his fight with GSP, the best ever and tell me that he wasn’t a world class fighter then.

In 2-3 years after the division gets sorted out and most of those guys have losses, that post is going to look even more ridiculous. Leon? Belal!? Those guys are probably the best matchups for Johnny to destroy.

GSP was not in his prime though. Was literally his retirement fight.

Hendricks would def be a contender or a champion today though. People saying he wouldn't be top 10 are wylin'.

I’ve seen most of Hendricks fights. He was a short wrestler with an overhand. Didn’t have any submissions or effective ground and pound. His power is a myth too. 5 finishes in 21 fights is nothing to be proud of.

I like how you choose his “prime”. So in December 2010 he got outclassed by Rick Story of all people and in 2011 he was suddenly a world beater? lmao

And his single best accomplishment is a loss to GSP on a verge of retirement, lol.

Belal and Leon are better than him everywhere and they are also considerably bigger than him.

Ok, let’s look at his last 5.

Beat Usman
Beat Colby
Lost 47-48 to Belal
Lost to Brady who is a beast
Got KO’ed by Prates, who has 7 KO wins in 8 UFC fights. Even then Leon won the first round against him and looked very good doing so

Honestly I wouldn’t favour Hendricks in any of those fights, except for Colby as he simply didn’t show up.

I think prime Usman beats WW Islam. In his prime he was arguably more athletic than Islam, bigger than Islam, had 100 percent TDD, some of the best cardio in the sport, an insanely good power jab from both stances, and legit one punch KO power with his right hand. He also had some decent kicks once he got with Trevor Whitman and he knew how to wall and stall his way to a victory if need be.
