I'm selling my holiday trailer and have a buyer. He wants to pay using PayPal. Is PayPal bullet proof?

I've never had an issue with PP...if anything, it's safer than meeting some stranger in the middle of a supermarket parking lot.

I really don't know too much about the security of it, but I've had it close to 10 years and never have had a single problem . Although I have been on Craigslist and have come into runs with scammers that I know use PayPal to steal, but I usually stay away.

So there is way for the buyer to deposit money into PayPal and then remove it?

This guy who wants my trailer says he will deposit into PayPal, once I have the funds he will make arrangement to have a friend pick up my trailer.

Once I have the funds am I safe?

If you sold the trailer on ebay you could see if the buyer has any feedback to show whether hes a good buyer. If its just some random guy wanting to use paypal to buy something when he could just as easily pay cash I would be leery. Never heard of anyone using paypal unless its bought online.

If you arent a valued seller then paypal will hold the funds for awhile they wont give it to you right away.

The guy says he is out of town working, which is understandable. Says he will pay me through PayPal, once I have his cash he will have a friend pick up trailer.

My worry is once I accept the cash from PayPal is there a way for him to get it back?

Would a email money transfer be safer?

I just wrote something up and deleted it. The more I think about it, the more it sounds like there's a probability of this being a scam. He can set up a claim on paypal and try to get his money back, even after it has deposited. If he really wants it, he can have his wife give the friend money and the friend can come pay you in cash.

I can send you money through paypal, and then file a complaint with paypal requesting a refund. Paypal protects buyers more than sellers and will issue a refund pretty easily.

That said, I've heard that if you use the "send gift money" option through paypal, you as the sender have no way to request a refund.

This is a popular PayPal scam. By giving him your trailer without having access to the cash, he can go back and report to PayPal that you have committed some kind of fraud. PayPal will refund the money to him. They can even pull it from the bank account that the money was deposited into. And of course, by that point, the guy already has your trailer. Take cash and only cash.

Are you talking to this guy in person, or through text? When it happened to me it was through text, and I called the same number he was texting me from and it wasn't even a phone line, at that moment I knew it was a scam. Give that a try .

@ToxicShocker is giving you the best answer. Please listen to him and protect yourself.

thx guys.

Fuck him, cash or certified cheque

I've never had an easy and convenient PayPal experience. It's the worst.

Good points above. It's good for the buyers. These days, eBay and Paypal protects the buyers at the expense of the sellers. Buyers get their money back too easily if complaints are made, and sellers cannot leave any negative feedback against deadbeat buyers. Buyers can even get their bids canceled nowadays without approval from the sellers. WTF???

Good eye opening thread for me. Didn't know a buyer can reverse transaction on PayPal.

yes there is a way! Credit card chargeback. Some scamming little turd tried it on me just recently albeit for something of fairly low value. Fortunately he tried it with a few people in a short time frame and they obviously clocked him for the scammer he was so they eventually released my funds back to me.
