How often do you watch 'The Critical Drinker' reviews?

I have had him recommended to me pretty often but never bothered watching fully

Ill give him a go

I don't like the fake drunken shtick. Other than that I think he's pretty fair. My go to is Jeremy Jahns, generally neutral and unpretentious and not overly critical ideologically.

I like him. Nerdrotic, Doomcock, RK Outpost, and Jeremy from Geeks and Gamers are all solid.

Yellowflash and Jeremy from the Quarterting are decent as well.

However, other times, he is grasping to find something to complain about. For instance, when the Prey trailer dropped, he came down hard on it. But, when the movie itself came out, his criticism seemed forced. He seemed like he would lose his shtick if he admitted he liked it.

From memory I thought he said a bunch of nice things about that one too. Might be wrong thought.

All the time. He's a great shit talker and makes me laugh. More he hates a movie the more I enjoy the review

Agree.

Although I try a bit to watch what he likes too, he seems to recommend pretty solid movies.

I tend to agree with a lot of what he says but there's no shortage of people out there complaining about everything being too woke.

I watch him because:
- he’s funny
- he knows what he’s talking about
- he admits when he is wrong, or his expectations turn out to be far off from his initial assumptions (accountability in this day and age??? Shit, sign me up!)

He admittedly thought Stranger Things season 4 was going to be shit after his step-by-step critique of season 3. Once it turned out that the creative team made nearly all of the recommended adjustments for season 4 that he had provided for season 3, he was like “alright, egg on my face…this season is pretty damn good actually.”

He is indeed a novel writer; you can find his action series novels on Amazon.

I subscribe to his channel and find most of his stuff pretty funny, though as others have pointed out he summarizes plots too much in his reviews so I generally only watch his videos on things I’ve already seen or things I have no intention of watching to avoid spoilers.

The culture wars bs can get a little exhausting sometimes but at least he’s nowhere near as bad as Nerdrotic, the Quartering, Doomcock or Sargon of Akkad. Drinker and Dave Cullen are the only two from that ilk that I like to watch.

I subscribe.

Some of his stuff is pretty good, but Christ the amount of whining he and his circle of friends do is incredible. You can tell they all think they are important cultural voices, not a bunch of geeks. He's definitely not as bad as some of the others though.

I think they've found a niche on YouTube where they realise being critical brings in far more views than being positive. Think it started with GoT season 8, where there rants got them noticed.

Not gonna lie, there's something about watching a bunch of 40 year old men complaining about how children's films aren't as good now as they used to be, in front of their toy collections, quite therapeutic.
All of his reviews are excellent, even if his jokes/memes are overused.

Unlike others in that circle of endlessly saying the same things about how shit/woke Star Wars, and nearly every franchise has become, he also does a lot of reviews of films/shows he recommends.

Still though, I don't care how good the money must be (those superchats are insane) I couldn't imagine doing multiple long-form podcasts a week talking about the same woke crap repeatedly.

There's more money to be made in rage bait, unless you have something worthwile/knowledgeable to say positively, which he does.

Basically yeah. His individual stuff is a lot better.

Have noticed him popping up as a guest on other channels, and he does seem to talk about the same stuff over and over again.

Out of curiousity I looked at the most viewed videos on his channel........legitimately almost all the top 100 are where he shits on things.

I forgot Dave Cullen. He’s actually the best of all of them, but maybe that’s because I’m a huge fan of (real) Star Trek, which he tends to focus more on than the others.

Midnight’s Edge is also good.

He has some legitimate critical analysis at times, but also gets too wrapped up in his schtick and panders at times.

He’s generally on point with his criticisms, but his recommendations are hit or miss. The hits are typically on films with universal acclaim.

Never heard of it.

He’s hit or miss for me. I prefer the ‘movie pitch’ guy more.. he makes fun of damn near everything in a funny tongue n cheek kind of way.

Drinker’s schtick gets old after you’ve seen enough of him. He seems to kind of have a basic template he slides over every review with openings for random jokes he’ll insert to make it feel specific. It’s not that I don’t agree with him on the overindulgence of ‘the message’ in mainstream but the criticism of it isn’t unique or insightful in many of his videos.

Even the stuff he likes seems to have its own template that he inserts every time making them all feel kind of generic in a way..

In short, I think he’s amusing sometimes -especially when he cans his typical generic gripes for more customized ones that fit the specific topic he’s covering.. but most of the time I find him too melodramatic and forcibly bombastic for my consistent liking.
