I have a love/hate relationship with BBT. I've seen every episode so I'm invested at this point. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's stupid. I think you have to have followed the characters from the beginning to appreciate some of the jokes.
On the other hand I think they have made Sheldon too big of a character and he has gotten quite annoying, IMO.
I think someone summed up Big Bang Theory nicely when they said it was "geek black face."

they actually hire real scientists and physicists for accuracy.. and the actress who plays the character Amy is an actual neuro scientist

I don't like either, although I watched a bit of HIMYM with my gf, and I remember enjoying some episodes around season 2 or 3 somewhere. Mostly when they completely ignored both the so-called main plot, or any other relationship drama.

BBT is the only show I can think of which is both pretentious AND cater to the lowest common denominator.

I've never managed to build up any actual rancor towards them like I did with e.g. Everybody Loves Raymond. It's been a good and interesting decade for comedy, so there isn't much reason to stay mad. Arrested Development, The Office (Uk + season 2&3 of the US version), Better Off Ted, Peep Show, Community, Modern Family (at first), Sunny, Inbetweeners, Bored to Death, Party Down, 30 Rock, The Trip and soon Arrested Development once again.

I remember people trashing on Friends when it first came out because it couldn't hold up to Seinfeld which couldn't hold up to Cheers which couldn't hold up to MASH. etc..

I recently rewatched Seinfeld (all of it), and it was brilliant. Friends and Cheers wasn't.

What's weird about HIMYM is the laugh track has gotten more noticeable in the recent seasons. The audience hardly laughed for the first few seasons (which were the best). It was almost like watching an episode of MASH.

I like the BBT personally. Is it the greatest show ever? Of course not. Is it better than most shows people in here probably watch? I'd say so.
