I mean who else is hitting nogi o uchi gari, harai goshi and uchi mata as counters to right crosses and lead roundhouses? Fucking no one. Not even sure how you train for that unless you have olympic judoka at your gym who happen to be crosstraining nogi TDs.

But yeah he had holes in his game and his ground game was dogshit. Getting subbed by Leben after putting him on his back hurt. I had been talking up his grappling to some buddies who were new to MMA. Still not sure how teh fook you win Olympic gold in Judo but can't retain top control or defend basic subs on the mat.

A few things... He didn't go to the Olympics. But he placed in the top5 in the 2003 Judo world championship and beat olympic gold medallist kenzo Nakamura in the process. He never had great control on the ground, but he only got subbed by Leben because he was exhausted. His gas tank was his main flaw IMO. And he didn't pace at all, just went to war.
I've said this many times here, my dream fight would've been Sexy vs Lombard, an Olympic judoka himself... Who mostly chose to throw bombs. Perfect match up.
They both tossed Shields (a judo black belt and lifelong grappler himself) around beautifully.

Akiyama is my all time favorite fighter. But ironically, I never saw any of his fights. I like him because I know him from a TV show called "Return of Superman" where korean celebs take care of their children when their wives get to have 2 days vacation every episode.


This video was pretty cool to highlight Akiyama's career. I was very surprised when I got into Sherdog for the first time and a lot of posters often post Akiyama. Idk if people truly like him here or it's just for the memes.

Akiyama's wife fanboying over Korean actor so Akiyama call the guy to his house. Akiyama sulked when the actor brought a lot of gifts for his wife and kid but none for him.

You are correct sir. I remembered him being in the mix but got my Olympic judoka mixed up. Yeah, Sexyama vs. Lombard would have been fire. IMO Teh Sex had the best Judo throws applied to MMA that we've seen, even better than Karo. Unless I'm misremembering, Karo mostly hit them from a clinch vs. counter to strikes like Akiyama was able to. Seriously explosive MFer.

Lol. Agree mixed Japanese and Portuguese tends to be good looking. Don't want to go down that rabbit hole but I think mixed people in general tend to be better looking than either parent. If they're ugly it's because one or both parents are ugly. IIRC Japan had their first bi-racial Miss Universe a few years back (African American dad) and I think she was pretty damn good looking:
