He was good not great. Definitely UFC caliber fighter at the time but not a legitimate top contender.
My favorite person who fightsPersonality matters boy.

He's korean but has a japanese name?
I believe his family is Korean too, he was just born in Japan and represents both countriesThe other way around. He seems to be pretty big in Korea. Prob bigger than in Japan. I saw him in a lot of Korean shows I used to watch.
He was a frustrating fighter to watch in the UFC. There were flashes of briliance:

and there was a lot of "what the fook are you doing man" like choosing to stand and bang with Vitor:

He was solid but he would've been better in my opinion if he chose to stand and trade less and embrace his judo.
Akiyama is my all time favorite fighter. But ironically, I never saw any of his fights. I like him because I know him from a TV show called "Return of Superman" where korean celebs take care of their children when their wives get to have 2 days vacation every episode.
This video was pretty cool to highlight Akiyama's career. I was very surprised when I got into Sherdog for the first time and a lot of posters often post Akiyama. Idk if people truly like him here or it's just for the memes.

Bonus:
Akiyama's wife fanboying over Korean actor so Akiyama call the guy to his house. Akiyama sulked when the actor brought a lot of gifts for his wife and kid but none for him.
He was a badass but was undersized and loved to brawl. He was very highly paid so his initial schedule in the ufc was rough until he moved to WW. Iron chin, and some of the flashiest judo you’ll ever see in mma next to karo paryisian. I loved watching his fight. He stood toe to toe with leben and never backed down. Akiyama did have cardio issues, however. Very good fighter.

Does Sherdog likes him truly or just for meme brada? I think Jake Gyllenhaal is more handsome than Akiyama.
Yeah -- very valid points. sometimes your takedowns are only as good as your top control (see Yoel Romero).I dont think it was as much a matter of choice.
He needed the clinch to get his TDs but didnt have the technical standup to set up his entrances, his footwork was non-existent, and lacked of a good shot to go from there
Still, he used to take down his opponents, the problem is they got back up because Akiyama's top control was not that good regardless of his judo accolades.
So what was he gonna do? He had to get into striking exchanges and trust on his power, which actually gave him some good Ws as vs Kang.
Furthermore, he lacked endurance to implement a wrestling heavy game
that sub was in the middle of an absolute dog fight where both men were exhaustedThis.
I mean who else hits nogi o uchi gari, harai goshi and and uchi mata to counter right crosses and lead roundhouses? Fucking no one. Not even sure how you train for that unless you have olympic judoka at your gym who happen to be crosstraining nogi TDs.

But yeah he had holes in his game and his ground game was dogshit. Getting subbed by Leben after putting him on his back hurt. I had been talking up his grappling to some buddies who were new to MMA. Still not sure how teh fook you win Olympic gold in Judo but can't retain top control or defend basic subs on the mat.
Sexy MFer though. I nutted three times while typing this post.
