How does Marvin Vettori have no power?

Are you seriously taking the position that mechanical efficiency is a small factor in power? Wow. Just because some people with good technique do not have much power does not mean it is not a factor.

KO power? Yes. Punchers are born. I can name a lot of boxers who can't punch themselves out of a wet paper bag and all they do is perfect punching. Malignaggi, Floyd, Algieri, Mora. Can you improve your power? Sure but only to a certain extent.

Someone like Bisping could have trained with the best trainers and perfected his punching technique and would still not have much KO power.

Interesting post.

His S&C workouts are legit, though.
Weird!

I guess he has a good reason for that?!?! Maybe fucked up knees...

Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of his, but if you look at how he punches in the video vs in his fights you'll notice
1. In the video his distance between him and the target he's radically closer, this is important because hes not having to stretch to maximum range of motion which he lacks as a puncher.
2. He is throwing a lot more variety of strikes and when throwing he is getting his whole body into it. In his fights he throws almost exclusively straights especially in a non-clinch situation and as others have said he an "arm puncher"
3. His feet are planted and underneath his torso. During his fights his head, chest and shoulders are always ahead of his waistline and even further ahead of his feet.

Combine these three issues and instead of getting a variety of strikes with power behind them. You're getting nothing but straights with no pop behind them, he is consistently off balance while striking and due to his limited range of motion he is rarely connecting fully when he does land. You can also see it in his kicks, granted roman is a tall guy but Vettori could hardly reach Roman's chin when throwing his roundhouse kick.

If he wants to stay a striker and abandon the wrestling and submission game that got him into the UFC all those years ago, he needs to really stay in the pocket, crowd his opponent against the fence and throw more hooks (especially to the body). He doesn't have the frame at MW or the build to be doing a rangy touch and go style where hes going to outpoint guys (especially now that damage is being weighed more heavily than volume). Something

But I really think he should go back to his wrestling/submission style. He has good top pressure, a few strong submissions in his arsenal and at MW he has the weight to really wear guys down. His build suits him to grapple like a Khabib not to say hes as talented but if he employed that game plan in a fight I think he'd have far more success than anything hes tried to do since getting into the rankings.

Floyd stopped Gatti within 6 rounds, so he certainly can hit hard. He doesn't hit that hard because he tends to hurt his hand.

Isnt Matt Serra Italian? He out of nowhere developed nuclear power to his hands.

Maybe the one thing Marvin needs is

This is not what you said. Not even an average job of walking your previous statement back.

I fucking hate watching Vettori's fights. He's so robotic, stiff and slow to watch.
Very true, agreed. I couldn't believe that rematch was main event, like why???!! what is the point of it all.

They need to stop booking Vettori, all his fights are on repeat, the same thing happens over and over, it always goes to decision no matter who the opponent is, and no one can finish him, and he can't finish anyone. Its like groundhog day all the time, I swear I feel like I'm watching the same fight on repeat always.

Vettori has an excellent chin, his chin is beyond amazing, he can take it, never ever been knocked out or finished with strikes in his entire career, I think Francis would struggle to KO him to be honest. Yes we know his chin is world class, but apart from that he is not easy to watch, he has the same fight over and over. Do you get that same deja vu feeling as me?. When you've watched 1 Vettori fight you've seen all of Vettori's fights basically.

100% the same feeling, there's no variation whatsoever in any of his fights, win or lose. I want him removed from the upper ranks to be honest, stick him on prelims going forward.

Too much pizza and pasta. He needs some protein.

I was just being an asshole. But aside from the gold medal sprinter who’s part black or something, I can’t really think of an Italian power athlete or athlete that had notable “power.” Maybe in soccer? I don’t know.

Italians let me know brah.

asshole, bigmouthed and ignorant: the anglosaxon potato eater sterotype.
Italy is at the top of soccer, fencing, volley... we used to be good even in judo and wrestling but i don't follow those sports anymore.
My former karate coach was an olympian golden medalist (Claudio Guazzaroni, his brother was - i think - bronze medal at some point).
Giovanni Parisi was boxing golden medalist and world champion, one of the few to take Chavez to decision.

Italy is like a small single state of usa with no state funding for sports and yet no single state of usa could won all we had won.

He looked pretty terrible at the weighins. That could definitely have a major impact

Rick Story and his body shots. Straight elbow punches Like Rock Em Sock Em Robots
I meant Vettori. Story's timing was just ass and he wouldn't commit to striking for long enough to land more than the occasional big shot.

I’m half Filipino and Greek living in the US. So I don’t know whom you’re referring to as a potato eating Anglo-Saxon.

Also, I’m sure Italians in general have better reading comprehension than you and I’m glad of that. (I’m not talking about Italians being good or bad in sports.)

Anyway, not going to argue with someone who doesn’t know what they’re reading.
