How do you evaluate what is a "Good Card" ?

I tend to agree with TS when evaluating cards, except I do enjoy women's MMA and heavyweights.

main and co-main are usually always good fights with some sort of implication for the top of the divisions

if the rest of the main card has good fights or well known guys its a good card to me... if its wmma or some new guys just off contender series (sphere card) i dont really care.

if they get me watching the prelims its a 10/10 (ufc 300)

- Highly ranked fighters
- High level prospects

Everything else is basically useless. UFC = the best fight the best. That's the intriguing part.

On paper:
-Main event champ fights the number one contender
-other fights on card are meaningful to the division and athletes career
-no gimmick or squash fights or undeserved rank jumps
-exciting fighters with finishing abilities

In reality:
-High action performances
-fighters going for the finish on the feet and the ground
-performances that show us that there’s levels to this (like Whittaker vs. Aliskerov)
-no home cooking, no bad judging or tons of fouls like eye poking, no stalling or trying to trick the rules (playing grounded)

- Skill level of the fighters. Sloppy brawls like Bonnar vs. Griffin are fun, but I'd much rather see a brutal technical match like Yan vs. Aldo or Lawler vs. MacDonald 2. I look for high skill level guys who aren't afraid to bang it out.

- Matchups. Are the fighters matched up in a fairly even and fun way? Squash matches aren't really fun, neither is fighters neutralizing each other and just stalling it out or being too scared to engage. A lot of times a card will have good fighters on paper but they're matched up so that you get boring fights instead of fun ones.

- Interesting fighters. Doesn't have to be a ranked guy or anything, just anyone who stands out for me in some way. Could be someone with a unique style, a hot prospect, some douche who needs a beating, or a devout disciple of the Just Bleed God.

Other dumb rhetoric: if you have anything bad to say about a card, stop watching the UFC altogether

  • Impactful fights like title fights, eliminators, and ranked fights
  • Even odds (ideally both fighters' odds are in the 100s)
  • Rising talent with younger fighters on win streaks
  • Fighters with a reputation for banger fights
  • Lighter weight classes (155 and below)
  • Overall skill level, preferably well-rounded fighters that aren't exclusively strikers or exclusively grapplers

step 1: do i know the people fighting?
- yes? ==> good card
- no? ==> bad card

step 2: find streaming site and watch for free

Name familiarity is one, if those fighters have fan friendly styles, and/or, have high rankings.

A card is only as good as the violence it produces. I don't care how many names you stack on a card if they all backpack their way to a decision it was a shit card.

A good PPV card is one where every fighter on the main card is ranked, I know who they are, and they are in an interesting matchup that affects the division.
