Heavily built, fed at the earliest age with Gatorade, proteins and creatine- they are all heads and shoulders taller than us and their muscles remind us of Rambo. Our frames are amusingly skinny to them - we are wimps, even the strongest of us - and because of that they often mistake us for Afghans.

I know we briefly touched on this before, but how come it seems like the Force Recon has been cut down to nothing while most of the other teams thrive? (Rangers, Green Berets, PJs, CCT...)

Eh, not quite. It all has to do with who the units fall under.

MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command) is still called MARSOC, the regiment underneath MARSOC is now being called the Raider Regiment. MARSOC falls under SOCOM and is considered special ops.

Recon has never fallen under MARSOC. Recon falls under the Marine Division (Force Recon always worked for the MEF - the unit above Division). They really have nothing to do with each other, although I'm sure a lot of Recon and Force Recon Marines went over to MARSOC. Force Recon still exists (although they are very small). Since the MEF has no control over MARSOC, there still is a need/want for the commanders to have that elite asset, so I imagine there will always be a few platoons of force recon.

As far as the others you mentioned, I wouldn't say that they're thriving, they just keep their numbers full because they've been around for so long. Rangers at one point during OIF/OEF had something like 25% of their overall strength weren't actual Rangers (didn't go to Ranger school) because of the need for numbers in the regiment.

Would you say they were better than our infantry? All I argued was that our non POG Marines are atleast just as good. Also that the Marine Raiders are better...

I never personally saw them in action but it was pretty obvious these guys were no slouches. Tough as nails, intelligent - a lot of good qualities it would take to be a great fighter. The guys all had a lot of pride, just like US Marines. Of course training and equipment would be different between the two countries, so that definitely factors in. The couple guys I knew that trained/deployed with them were very impressed with them. I can't really say who is better (plus I would be a little biased), but I can say I have a lot of respect for them and would have no problem with them by my side in a fight.

Everybody in Batt is a Ranger. That 25% you gave shouldn't be a surprise due to a few reasons:

1) There are a lot of support elements within Batt that are untabbed (i.e. cooks, commo, intel, etc.)

2) There are times when Batt is over-manned because of TDY and schools

3) A rifle company will probably be 80-90% tabbed and this is due to new Rangers coming in

I served in The Walking Dead after they reopened the unit in OIF. We saw some combat in Iraq and a friend in my company got a silver star for stopping a vbied.

Interestingly we are called The Walking Dead because of how many casualties there were in the unit during vietnam. Our boys got chopped to pieces during that conflict then they deactivated the unit.

Overall the Marine Corps tries too hard with the whole bad ass thing. They kept referring us to Spartans while I was in which is laughable. We are complete pussies compared to a real Spartan.

We suck at naming things.

As far as comparing a Marine grunt unit to Royal Marines, I would say we are pretty comparable. Some units are better than others from experience and personnel. I was pleased to work with them in OIF.

I, however, was totally unimpressed with SEAL Team 4. I watched those idiots bungle several operations resulting in the loss of a few of their members. I've seen them hit the wrong house on a raid before from my observation post. They threw in flash bangs and knocked the door down only to realise they meant to go in the house next door. Really funny shit. SEALS aren't meant for direct action on land. They are a recon unit. They are best at insertion deep in enemy territory and going to scout for us. They carry enough ammo where if they see action they can suppress and dip.

Small world! Do you happen to remember what years he was in? I got out of SOI just as the unit activated. So I got to experience the master clusterfuck that goes along with it. We were put under 8th Marines and got shit on a lot. But we were the most trained battalion in Camp Lejeune by the time we deployed. Lots of boot Sgts in the battalion, but I was super lucky to have guys who served with 2nd Recon in Fallujah as my squad leader and company mssgt. Left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
