LHW, skill-wise, is a far deeper division than HW, and it always has been. HW is literally the least skillful division in all of MMA (excluding WMMA). Guys at HW can get by on having punching power alone, hence why we get guys like Derrick Lewis in title contention, or you get a guy like Gane, who has practically zero grappling, fighting for titles just because he managed to dance around the big punchers and expose their awful skill-sets.

That doesn't mean that all LHWs would beat HWs - that's obviously not true, and that's because the size and power does make a big difference, but when you get a guy like Jones, who is already a very big LHW, and then he packs on some extra muscle, it shouldn't be all that surprising when he totally outshines everyone at HW. The only thing any current HW has over Jon Jones is physicality. Jon is more skilled than any HW who has ever competed in the UFC.

I know that was the time Jones wasn't the Jones we knew! Absolutely wasn't in his peak after the second Gustaffson fight i'd believe. Smith fight was weird. Thiago done pretty well against him. Reyes beat him i still think to this day, idk what the hell happened with Reyes since then but he gave Jones the fight of his life at UFC 247! Gane isn't a good ground fighter we all know that. But still how did Smith managed to survive 5 rounds against even a "slower" Jones? Respect men.

Jones fights to the level of his opponents. If he thinks you are dangerous then he will train hard for you. It’s been like that in his career. The people that had close fights with him are big underdogs. The dangerous guys he would trounce easily.

Jon looked like he was sparring in the Anthony Smith fight, didn't show any urgency to finish the fight. I think the only difference was the attitude. If he wanted to destroy him quickly, he had the ability to do it, but maybe he just wanted to win comfortably and take as little risks as possible

Gane is overrated that's why. His biggest wins have come against bangers like Tuivasa, Derrick Lewis and Jairzinho, or guys like JDS and Volkov who are either on their way out, or fringe top 5.
Gane is good, don't get me wrong. He's powerful and a great kickboxer, with great hands, but he's super one dimensional and by no means a complete MMA fighter. What happened is what I expected to happen.
Honestly, the only person I think that has a shot against Jones is Blaydes, or maybe Pav if he swung for the fences. The rest of the division is old (Stipe), or one dimensional themselves.
