How did Anthony Smith lasted 5 rounds against Jones and Gane didn't last 3-4 mins?

People thought Gane was better than he is because of his somewhat flashy style. Gane has never showed good grappling.

Smith might not be the greatest, but he's a tough dude imo, doesn't get enough credit for that.

Good BJJ, fought a lot of big names, beat a few, and he's got some grit. Glover put a monumental beatdown on him, Smith literally spitting teeth out in the cage, but he kept going.

Yeah, Gane bellyflopped to the ground in one of the fakest takedowns I've seen. Before that, Gane attempted to punch Jones's leg and then whiffed a punch, leving his back exposed to Jones. Gane's striking was worse than CM Punk's.

Are you saying Jones at LHW would beat all those guys ? Otherwise your analogy doesn't work.

And I don't believe he would, he may very well lose to the likes of Jiri.

Impossible. Jones won his last fight so he is the greatest to ever exist. If he loses a fight then he was never any good. There are only those two extremes for every fighter lol

Smith said it himself: motivation
It can be hard to wake up for guys like him compared to absolute legends when you've been on top of a division for so long. It's similar with basketball. How can the warriors beat the Celtics when they lost to the thunder for example.
Or how can the Patriots lose to the lions but win the Superbowl.

People and Reyes will downplay it as a bs excuse, but with Jones I think it's a very real thing. He can train and fight down to the level he perceives his opponents/ challenge at this stage or just how motivated he is for various other reasons.

Gane also attempted to punch Jones's thigh, which is what immediately preceded the missed left and the takedown. The leg punch was the agreed upon signal.

Cause guillotine chokes should be one of the first no-gi submission defenses you should be taught as a mma fighter. Week 1 shit, application of and defenses of guillotine.

Anthony Smith is 1-0 against Rua. He's not as weak as some users on Sherdog say that he is.
Oh come on he beat shogun in 2018. Let's not act like that means anything.

Smith is a competent grappler.

Gane is not.

Pretty simple stuff.

Jones at 205 was starting to look pretty stale, Smith has very good grappling at 205, and wasn't going to let himself be put into those positions, and the skillsets at 205 are generally much better than at HW. Jones is also looking absolutely strong as hell

Is op really pretending Smith is just some no name bitch? He has a decent highlight reel. Maybe not the best but very respectable.

Gane must have let the moment get to him and folded under the pressure.

Thats the only thing I can think of that can explain his lackluster performance.

Because Gane really is that bad on the ground. Smith has a lot of losses and fought scared, but he also has like 50 fights and can grapple.

So were most of his opponents since Pride. Shogun went 9-12-1 in the UFC.

I think Jones' performance in the last three fights at LHW had more to do with Jones rather than his opponents. Smith is tough as nails, but he's not a great fighter. Same can be said about Santos and Reyes, and Jones struggled with both, yet they have both been smashed by far superior opponents than Jones. I think Jones simply wasn't in it at the end of his LHW career which is understandable considering the quality of opposition got worse and worse (and ironically, Jones struggled with them more and more).
