How did Anthony Smith lasted 5 rounds against Jones and Gane didn't last 3-4 mins?

Jon Jones has got that crackhead strength in grappling.

Anthony Smith is a crafty veteran and he trained with an actual crackhead to prepare for the fight.

actually the home invasion happened after the jones fight, which explains why smith didnt take the belt home.

Because on paper Smith could beat anyone at any given time, he just didn't show up that night

Smith has had close to 50 pro MMA fights, Gane started training in MMA 4 years ago!! let that sink in

Gane is talented but he is very raw and a rookie. he only has got this far because he is HW, I swear any lighter division he wouldn't be in this position.

I dislike Jones, but I truly believe he didn't even want to finish Smith to make him feel even worse about himself.
Style make fights, too bad now we have to see Jon fight Stipe then retire.

Styles make fight. Also a fast finish doesn't always mean the difference between the fighters is that big...

This is true. Jones saw an opportunity and jumped on it. Dude has shown he has a nasty guillotine.

jones wasn't motivated against smith, jones, reyes. nobody cared about those guys and jones was expected to win.

reyes said he had been training for jones since he started MMA. he blew his wad in the first 3 rounds and was dying in the 4th and 5th. unfortunately he wasn't aware the texas commission rules reward forward progress and he was backing up trying to counter most of the fight.

It was unmotivated Jones.

And after that illegal knee, Jones showed him mercy.
This is what Jones has said too. Could be true. Jones probably just got bored and didn't feel like he was really being challenged anymore. It's like playing the same game every single day, you'll eventually get bored with it but if you take some time off and come back to it, it becomes fun again especially if they update the game and there are new challenges/maps/etc to do. That's what Jones did with the HW challenge on his return.

It really seemed that at LHW Jones was bored and just "played with his food."

At HW he feels a real threat so he's much more keen on finishing the fight as quickly as possible.

Because Jon was motivated.

Look at how well a motivated Jon does. He crushed a fellow GOAT in DC, he's beaten former LHW champs with ease.

Don't be surprised if he finishes Stipe in 1-2 rounds. Does that make Stipe worse than Smith or Reyes? No.

I don't think narrative that jones wasn't motivated is true. That's fan boy fantasies.
Hes way too competitive and cautious to not be motivated. The obvious answer to op is that we learned from UFC 1 that no ground game vs ground game can lead to wash out. Jones has grappled for many years whereas game is new to grappling and has said he doesn't really train it. Gane got away with it until Francis because he just never fought a good grappler. The same way Pereira became mw champion. Smith and others can grapple so they don't get subbed instantly.

Tldr: without basis for grappling we can have fights where a person is taken down and subbed right away. It's like a minimum requirement to be in MMA.

Jones was treating Smith like a punching bag, it didn’t look like he wanted to finish him

That's true. One of my main sparring partners over the last few years and I have had tons of fights. Most of the time we are pretty even, but one time I finished him in less than 30 seconds with a Guillotine. We started over and he was in such a rush to make up for it I submitted him again in less than 30 seconds. Judging from that one day it looked like I was way better, but I've probably only subbed him like 10 times in 10 years, 2 of them just happened to be very quick and within a 1 minute period lol
