How bad is Ben Askren's boxing really?

Ben's striking was never even really passable to be honest. His grappling just carried him for long enough that I guess he never felt the need to really build it. I expect Paul to be the better striker of the two. Ben's striking looked downright awful last time out. So unless he puts in some unreal work in the gym where him already being seasoned as a fighter to take shots will be enough to get by him. But I really doubt it. And that says something considering a lot of us are giving Jake frekkin Paul the advantage over you in striking.

His striking is as good as Conor grapling.

Both fighters by choice failed to develop their weak points.

It’s not even close. That’s being way too complimentary of Askren’s standup game. Conor’s BJJ is not bad.

Maia was definitely winning those exchanges. He was landing the cleaner/heavier head shots and doing A TON of great body work that the commentary ignored. He just didn't cut up Ben's face, where as Bens glancing shots marked up Maia's face and made the striking look more even than it was.
For sure. Maia also bled like a demon spawn from hits. He looked beaten up even after backpacking a dude for a round. Just a face that showed damage, doesn't indicate the real extent

Jake Paul is not Brock Lesnar. He's not a freak of nature. He's an asshole who has fought a basketball player and this guy:
don't you think he is serioulsy training boxing for 3 years ? Good mma fighters don't have more training behind them. 3 years of dedication, when you are young and a bit talented can make you good, no ?

It’s pretty bad.. There’s a reason he was picked for this fight, the Youtuber is going to decision him with ease and talk mad shit about MMA-fighters.

I feel he's never tried to be a striker, hence why he looks like shit standing. But I feel if he tried he could at least reach Damien Maia level. Competent, but not great.

And as you said, he's been training striking in some form for a decade. He has WAY more of a head start that Jakes last 3 opponents combined. If Funky focuses SOLELY on boxing, I think he could at least put together a good smothering style strategy and possible wear down Jake and maybe tko him.
jake literally has a 3 year head start lol.

That's the thing: He's not talented. What the hell have you been watching? He struggled vs 2 other youtubers, showed horrible technique, plodding foot work. His last fight against a basketball player he got the KO but does that prove that he will clown Ben Askren who has been forced to utilize the little striking he has against some of the best mixed martial artists in the world? No!

Again I can't mention this enough, Ben Askren has horrible stand up but he faces Jake fucking Paul now so he has more than a punchers chance.

I didn't watch him box, so i don't know if he is talented or not. All i was saying is that it is possible that someone with 3 years training could beat a ben askren striking level mma fighter in a boxing match (which is not mma striking, shall i recall). See malinaggi vs lobov, i wouldn't have given the slightest chance to lobov before the fight (ok these are 2 pro figting athletes).

There's your answer. Bad striker or not Askren has been around the fight game. Thr unbelievable beating he took from Lawler would have made Jake Paul piss his cup and trousers and he would not touch a pair of fighting gloves again. Ben Askren is battle tested, got tough and grit. Do I think Askren will win? Yeah he probably will. Do I give Jake no chance in hell? Hell no!

I think Jake will come out strong in the first 2 rounds and then start to slow down and Askren wearing him down with several soft ineffective punches on his way to a decision win.

Makes sense that he got his hip replaced. Dude strikes like someone who has the hip of an 80 year old. I'm surprised he was still able to wrestle with such shit mobility.

Has he been doing that though? If you make my mom do that for 10 years I expect her to look better than Ben, so the only conclusion I can come to is that he hadn't been training striking hardly ever

Well, his fans excuse his bad performance vs. Jay Hieron in 2011 because Askren trained nothing but striking and Hieron was a better wrestler than he expected. That was 9 years ago. Obviously he hasn't trained boxing full-time since there are other elements to MMA and he mostly grappled. But I'm sure he's trained at least some for boxing since before his debut in early 2009.

That said, I'd like to see Askren win, but wouldn't bet on it.

His striking looked equally bad when he was in Bellator long before the replacement.

How does it though? He can't box, and doesn't punch as hard. So how does being an ex fighter help him in a boxing match? It's not like Jake Paul quits when hes tired or hurt either, as far as toughness it's pretty irrelevant in the boxing match

Exactly. I'm sure post-prime Roy Nelson or the current Tony Ferguson could take a lot of punishment in a match with a better boxer...but that doesn't mean they'll win. It seems like Ben's only hope is Jake punching himself out (cardio-wise) and Askren finishing him in what might be one of the ugliest TKOs ever (death by a thousand weak arm punches).

His hip was shit for years. He just finally got it replaced when he retired. You think it just suddenly went bad overnight? It's a gradual process.

I'm sure it wasn't instant, but since I'm not Ben nor his doctor I'm not going to make after-the-fact diagnoses and use it as excuse for Ben's boxing 10 years ago. You shouldn't either.

Askren is going to spam clinches, hang on him and tko an exhausted the youtube kid late in the fight. Fucking hell guys, this logan guy got bloodied up by a fucking crab in his fight before ko'ing the nfl dude
