Hotels Really Don't Have a 13th Floor

I live in Vancouver. Lots of Chinese. 4 in Chinese is bad luck. So no 4th floors. Or 14, or 24.....

Good point. Could be confusion looking from outside.

Here, I started seeing these elevators that DON'T have buttons inside. At the lobby, you have to input what floor you want, then go use the elevator that arrives that's scheduled to go to that floor. Feels so weird. You can't change your mind which floor you want to get off on.

It is pretty foolish superstition. Not all buildings are like this obviously but it still does happen occasionally even with new buildings. The company I work for was designing a 18 floor office tower once and the clients wanted nothing but HVAC, server storage and other utilities on the 13th floor. You also couldn't access that floor from the passenger elevators and had to either use the freight elevator or the stairs. I found it absurd because even on the freight elevator it wasn't labeled "13", it was just labeled "U" for utilities.

I have seen that movie about 3 or 4 times and remember 0 things about it except for I believe a ledge scene.

If Chinese Hotel, then wont have a 14th floor because 14 is the bad luck number in Chinese culture.

If you a large brand new building in a Chinatown in Western Country, then wont have 13 or 14 floor in keeping with both traditions.

Many buildings don’t have a thirteenth floor precisely because of idiotic superstitious beliefs.

I never knew this was true but I guess some Hotel dont have a 13th flood cause they are scared. But what are they scared of. Is there a reason for this crazy superstition? Is the 13 floor that same a the friday the 13th?
