Here we go again, two NRL players trialling for the NFL.

@Rimbaud82 Much needed win v Cardiff eh m8?Three match losing streak was brutal.I cant find live viewing here and only get delayed updates.Only the internet has live feeds. Can you please remind me of who offers a decent live feed(website for free)You mentioned it before but i cant remember...BBC or the like?Cheers.

i feel like the games are just too different for someone to jump ship and try to be successful

Taumololo was so good that his national coach forgot all about him and left him on the bench for half a game!

That's not really a fair dig at him. David Kidwell is just in so far over his head it's not funny

Yeah I agree...it's fun to speculate up to a point, but it's hard enough for some guys to swap between rugby union and rugby league never mind something which bears very little resemblance.

Yeah quality stuff, though I was only keeping half an eye on the game because I had something to finish, was worried we were gonna do the classic and choke. BBC iPlayer has the games if you use a vpn, but the cardiff one was on sky anyway so it wouldn't have been on there so I just had to find a stream. I always find them on /r/rugbyunion on reddit were I post as well, sometimes really good HD acestreams for big game, or else just poor quality browser ones but as long as I get to watch it it's ok haha.

Oh and don't forget my rugby thread, doesn't get much love

Kidwell is a moron the Kiwis are so shit right now. Hope Kearney can sort out the Warriors though, I've foolishly ended up supporting them as my League team.

Game 1 for the Warriors season always bring so much hope. Usually takes about 3 weeks for us to lose it all.

I don't really give Kearney that much credit either. Fairly or not, I think it's more Bennett

i think maybe a top nfl running back could switch to rugby and be decent, but he'd really have to get his cardio up

Don't forget the false hope that reappears during origin haha.

Yeah I think top running backs or wide receivers might do ok on the wing in rugby, lot of seriously good athletes which counts for something in any sport, but they'd need much better cardio as you say. But their tactical understanding and skills might let them down in rugby, they'd need to learn positioning, how to be able to read the game, and develop passing and kicking skills. Maybe they could play in the centres, but their understanding of position and their playmaking ability would probably not be good enough for there especially. But some of them are just freak athletes, great work ethic etc. so I could possibly see it. Not that it would ever happen, so much more money in the NFL!
Probably not the best example as he only ever made an NFL practice squad so not a top quality american football player but it's about the only comparison there is, someone like Carlin Isles gets by in Rugby 7s because he can use his natural athleticism and speed (7s is much less tactical, way more open space and shorter games) but when he signed to play with Glasgow Warriors he wasn't good enough to get a game. He wouldn't be one of top 7s players either. Perry Baker is a better 7s player, he's never even tried to play the full game as far as I know.

Similar issues in terms of tactical understanding and their fitness, but if they lost a bit of weight I could see some defense players playing in the forwards. Khalil Mack is such a beast, (if he can run with the ball and learn how to scrummage/lineout etc.) someone with this kind of strength could definitely be a beast at blindside flanker hitting rucks and taking the ball in to contact.

As I say, it's fun to speculate. And with rugby league positions (what Taumalolo, Holmes and Hayne play) it'd be a bit different.

Fresh interest from two other teams apparently - http://www.espn.com.au/nrl/story/_/...o-valentine-holmes-receive-fresh-nfl-interest

NRL stars Jason Taumalolo and Valentine Holmes' stocks in the NFL are on the rise.

A week after they worked out for 14 NFL teams including the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers in Los Angeles, two new teams - not represented by scouts at the two-hour session - have shown interest in signing the duo.

AAP understands they might offer invites to Taumalolo and Holmes to fly to the US for individual workouts.

The interest comes as National Football Scouting (NFS) president Jeff Foster, who ran the session at LA's Loyola High School, sent video from the day to NFL teams.

The video clips shot by NFS show North Queensland's Dally M-winning forward Taumalolo and Cronulla winger Holmes undergoing athletic tests and skills, including the 40-yard dash, cone drills and speed and agility exercises where they were required to catch a gridiron ball on the run.

NFL scouts and player personnel directors will analyse the information to determine if their skills will translate to American football and whether to invite the players back to the US for individual workouts.

They will also examine footage from their NRL games.

Attending the LA session were scouts from the Jets, Eagles, 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, LA Rams, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, San Diego Chargers and the Seattle Seahawks.

The players' Australian manager Chris Orr said four NFL teams immediately expressed interest in Taumalolo and Holmes.

"We have had a lot of interest since the workout and it all seems extremely positive and well received," Orr said.

"I am now letting Jason and Valentine enjoy their much-deserved break."

Both players, who were inspired by rugby league international Jarryd Hayne's stint last year with the 49ers, said it would be a dream come true if they were signed by a NFL team.

They are contracted to their NRL teams for 2017 and say they will fulfil their contracts, but that could be tested if NFL teams attempt to entice them to the US for the 2017/18 season.

Maybe they could make a practice squad, play a few pre-season games like Hayne but I really don't see either of them managing to beat out all the players and actually play a regular season game, unless on special teams maybe. It just seems like such a waste of their talent if they actually try this!

The NRL has a lot less talent and talent pool to choose from.

Yeah that makes sense, doubt they'd be able to make it at DE either, but MLB sounds way too technical. I used to follow the NFL a lot when I was younger but never knew much about the technical side of things, I was just watching the NFL Top 100 videos where they talk about Luke Kuechly.
I played MLB in hs and some in college and it's probably the most cerebral position on defense, not saying they couldn't do it and be successful but you've gotta be sharp with a natural instinct for how plays develope and where to be to create the most damage.

What about outside OLB? Do they just do what the MLB instructs them to do?

No they know their assignments but calling out shifts, audibles, and plays comes from the middle
