Maybe it's that technique where you try to embody the character as much as possible, method acting basically. For example the page of "things that make me laugh" would be a good way to imagine 1. What kind of psyche finds these things funny? and then 2. Practise putting yourself in the mindset of someone that does find those things funny.

For an actor acting is literally the only work they do and it works on a contractual basis (meaning long periods of doing nothing in-between contracts), so if you're serious doing well at a role it makes sense to bring the work home and focus on it as much as possible.

I guess the problem is getting too entangled in that mindset you are trying to manifest. Like, Wesley Snipes believing he was a day walking vampire on the set of Blade was one thing. Ledger going full psycho mode for a role where hes a sadistic, mass murdering lunatic is something entirely different. When Jack is warning you, theres problems.
