Kyle Rittenhouse was connected to a national story. The protests, the riots, the counter protests, etc... those are national news and they are happening accross the country. A standalone violent crime where a suspect is in custody and justice is unfolding as it should is not associated with a national story is local news.

Now, if he'd have shot 4 people it would have been a mass shooting. In a slow news week a mass shooting is national news.

When I was in Miami there were car jacking shooting robberies daily with long police chases regularly that never got reported nationally. In fact, it was only when the situation got so out of control as to turn into helicopter chases that any of this even got covered locally. There are regularly shootings on browsed county beaches that go entirely unreported so as to not deter tourism.

This shooting sounds personally motivated between the shooter and the victims. It’s not like this guy walked in and made a political statement by “executing” restaurant patrons. It’s on par with the sort of killings that happen in domestic violence, gang rivalries, and the such which rarely make national media.
