HBO - Chernobyl anyone?

Just finished episode one. Extremely solid show. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did.

My friends at work had the same complaint, particularly the ones from formerly communist countries.

I get it. You'd have to basically throw away the majority of movies based on the Roman empire, like gladiator etc. Its one of those things you just need to get over.

The majority of HBO viewers arent reading subtitles. And eastern European accents are difficult to understand, hard to fake by most American or British actors, and can easily butcher a show/movie.

I'm used to it and I don't really care, although I definitely would have preferred subtitles. It would have been ten times as immersive.

In this case, for Russian speakers who grew up in that part of the world while this was actually happening, hearing everyone speaking English is more than distracting, it's comical.

.

No i get what youre saying, but what percentage of viewers falls into this category.

Most of the American public cant make it through a meal, or tske a shit without being entertained by its phone.

Subtitles are out of the question

Awesome so far.. been waiting for this and the final ‘Deadwood’

The denial in the communist block is always mind blowing, not sure how much is exaggerated tho -I’ve always wondered about that.

Also, as a side note but on the communist tip.. if you guys haven’t heard of/seen a film called ‘The Death of Stalin’ check it out, really good flick that as some solid dark humor.

No it wouldn’t.

He's right. While show should have been in Slavic with sub-titles. If you can't follow along with subtitles, you don't deserve the payoffs. 3 of my favorite well known movies are subtitled.

My god, ive been agreeing the entire time. What im saying is it doesnt have massive broad appeal to the average American viewers.

I watched his performance and thought 'For that role, they should have hired Bernie Sanders'

Anything to keep him out of politics I'm ok with.

First episode was pretty intense.

Radiation poisoning looks painful as fuck.

The people watching from town with the nuclear fallout ash floating down on them was a striking image.

The actor who played Maester Lewin from GoT was excellent in his little part, even though he made a critical error.

Im going to start the show this weekend. I’ll rejoin this thread when I’m caught up.

After the data is collected, you report your findings back here asap.

Watched the first episode, really liked it. At this point I just accept any foreign based story being filled with British accents, as painful as it is. Can't wait for the rest of the reason, seems high quality so far.

Subtitles mean you’re constantly taking your eyes off the actors/scenes to read what’s being said, and occasionally you miss some of what’s being said anyway as a result of having to read. In what world is that ‘more of a payoff’..?

I get that there are subtleties that get lost between languages but getting a perfect visual at the same time as a language you understand works just fine.

Better to be able to use 2 senses at once (eyes and ears) so you can watch and listen at the same time.
