HBO - Chernobyl anyone?

Just watched first 4 series. It was the best movie about USSR west ever made. It was Very accurate and it felt like I was watching a Russian horror movie.
I was wondering about this and could not think of a better movie or tv-series about Soviet Union. Any Russian movies with western distribution you can recommend? I just watched Balabanov’s Cargo 200. It was pretty damn bonkers for sure.

I’m not sure what movies have been distributed to the west, but if you like grim reality movies about Russia then you should watch «Durak» (Fool). Can’t get more real than this. It’s actually been filmed by Balabanov’s protege.
Another one is «Chistilische» (Purgatory) by Nevzorov. It’s about Russian soldiers in Chechnya.

Those two not bad either. It’s actually made by same guy who made Дурак. But Fool is the real thing.

Fuel is enriched to about 2% instead of about 80-90% in case of little boy and how the fuel is assembled, it is not in a single lump but spread around. It would not happen no matter how hard you tried.

When various sources are comparing Chernobyl vs Hiroshima perhaps they're comparing the levels of contamination in the aftermath and not the nuclear yield.

Love all 4 episodes so far, can't wait for the final tonight.

My asshole was clenched super tight when the 3 workers went into the water and their lights starting going out.

It was super tense and well made, just the sound of the decimeter intensifiying as they are pushing deep into the radiation was a great stress mecanism

Mine too. I just figure there is a bigger reason to proceed with such a drastic measure.

From my understanding, radiation on a Chernobyl level is quite bad. So bad, that the puppies and kittens have to go, because they pose a real threat to exposure.
Funnily enough I have been watching the Planet Earth Mini Series and just concluded it last night. The last episode had a big focus on Chernobyl, now, that add a lot to The Wolves of Chernobyl.

The path back to health in the region is, in fact that nature is taking it back. Nature is the great fixer of man's problems.

I said this to a poster a long, long time ago on this forum when a poster said 'we (humans) are killing this planet'. I stated then and I state now, we humans cannot kill this planet. That is a laughable prospect. We can make it inhospitable for man, but in so doing we actually return the planet to nature and a more balanced state. Sure it make a decade or more for the planet to rebalance, in the case of an all our nuclear holocaust but the planet would bounce back and likely in a way that is more balanced than today. Even if lingering radiation affects lifespans and others for hundreds of years after.

Chernobyl now and in the future will likely be one of the most balanced ecospheres on the planet because of the accident. A grand irony.

Damn, it’s only 5 episodes..? I know it’s a mini series but I was hoping for at least 8 episodes or so.

Really well made. This series is a great example of awesome story telling and great writing.

In real life they’re all survived. Two of them still living to this day.

Are you one of the villains from the new Godzilla movie?

I like to think of myself as more like the Jeff Goldblum character in Jurassic Park explaining the reality of the situation to the reluctant listeners.

Great mini-series so far!! I can't really even explain what is so good about it. It's pretty slow moving as far as "action" but the story telling, the acting, the suspense, the creepiness.......it's all awesome.

I think it just brings in so many factors like human perseverance, government cover ups, people sacrificing for the greater good, people having to do horrible things to survive, etc.

Biorobots! Crude but apparently effective! The sound of those dosimeters is haunting....

Explosion in scale of megatons or even kilotons is simply not possible. Quite annoyed that they included that myth.
While not quite a nuclear reactor expert myself, I had operated one for a number of years while in the US military.
My take on water scenario was that they were afraid of a steam explosion. There was an enormous amount of thermal energy in the molten core, with a seemingly endless supply of energy behind it that would keep it hot. Any amount of water hitting the core would be instantly vaporized. And a large volume would explode sending a shower of radioactive debris everywhere.

I still think Chernobyl diaries is the superior art. But I guess everybody knows that.

So I believe it will show up on my HBONow account at 9pm EST tonight, right? Can't wait! I know what I'm doing tonight.......sitting around getting depressed while I watch this show!! ;)

What an absurdly good series from beginning to end.
