I tried to learn Japanese, Thai and Chinese at various stages of my life.

Just apps and videos really. Didn't stick either. Not enough practice.

Taught myself how to repair lawnmowers and cars. How to sew. Learned how to fix some HVAC stuff messing with ours. Had a gig for several years writing for publication and had basically no training before I got into that.

Once you understand how to learn, and importantly how YOU learn best, it's rather easy to teach yourself many things, especially with the wealth of resources we have nowadays.
