Has trainining MMA/BJJ and/or watching it made you a snob or highly critical when watching fight scenes from TV shows and movies?

Especially when it comes to technique, form and realism?

Something that aggravates the hell out of me is when in film/TV can't seem to get the form of a simple rear naked choke hold down...

I just got around to watching Sons of Anarchy this past month...

I was watching the second season when Jax and Clay finally have it out and fight in the Jail cell. Clay clamps on this terrible looking rear naked choke hold and Jax is able to break the hold by elbowing Clay in the stomach behind him...WTF?

How is that even realistic?

Just Monday morning venting for me...

any other examples of terrible, unrealistic fight scenes?

So you think clay and jax should be expert in BJJ? Clay should have locked his legs in a triangle around Jax's stomach, and maybe Jax should have attacked one arm and rolled into clay.

It's realistic becuase they don't know what they are doing. now if I'm watching a show where they have an expert grappler and he does shit that is not befitting an expert than yeah, I'm calling bullshit.

Yeah I can't really watch most martial arts movies since I've trained seriously. Especially the highly exaggerated stuff (wires etc). Bruce Lee type things are ok.

No I"m saying that anyone, especially those who fight on a frequent basis should know the rudiments behind a simple choke hold...

hell...even Brutus the Barber Beefcake had the form down 20 years ago.

I think the fight scenes in The Dark Knight Rises were pretty shitty, and you don't have to have a yellow belt in Karate to notice that. There is basically no martial arts to the fight scenes in that movie, just horrible haymakers. I find this to be a bigger deal when I'm actually watching MMA with friends that don't train. I try to bite my tongue but when it comes to grappling I can't sometimes.

If some kid sees a movie with a real RNC choke then applies it at recess...

But guns are okay.

Im more of a snob in the sense that when I am watching MMA with some of my friends who are very casual fans and they say something that is factually incorrect or they pick fighter A to beat fighter B and I disagree with their pick.

I am usually quick to correct them or explain why the fighter they did not pick will win. In my defense I am usually right.

Im sure I annoy them, but they dont tell me so.

Um, real fights have a lot of haymakers. That's why they are usually over quickly. It does not look like TDKR, but it is guys putting everything into a few punches.

MMA is different from a real fight. In a real fight, you often go for maximum damage quickly. You may be willing to walk through an average punch to land that big overhand right followed by 8-9 more. People who train throw the hay makers better, and can (like me imo) duck under one and get a body lock.

I do find myself telling my kids, in an attempt to be honest, "if that guy has never grappled or kickboxed for real, I could probably take him."

To answer your question, yes. Not just MMA, but seeing real fights.

Most realistic fight scenes of all time:

Shane vs. Tavon on The Shield

Tony vs. Ralphie on The Sopranos

I think one of the most underrated fight scenes in Hollywood history is Gary Busey vs Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 1. Granted, it didn't have the flare, and finesse of Bruce Lee, Jet li etc...but the grappling was very accurate...and way ahead of its time.

Rorion Gracie choreographed it.

I understand that normal people throw dumb looping punches but Bruce Wayne trained with the league of shadows and supposedly has years of intense martial arts training, so in that context no he should not look like average douche at the bar.

After I had sex I became critical of porn stars. True story.

Not generally. There are some exceptions though. I watched "The Raid" The other day, and it just seemed like stylized fighting, almost theatrical like pro-wrestling or something, I couldn't take it seriously.

I also wonder if it is super easy to rear naked choke anybody, like Dexter does all the time on his show.

Agreed, Porn Stars seem to be too focused on repition.

The never use the full tool set

When's the last time you saw a porn star use "just the tip" "Log Jam" "Divebomber" "slip and slide" or "the ass fracking"

They could learn a lot from us.

I notice that my sex is better than their's is.. And I'm being serious. I'm actually pretty basic, but I like to kiss more, and when you act like you actually care about the person just a little, it makes it feel better most of the time. I mix in the actual feelings with h*mping like a stripper dances. If you are good at sex, a lot of the time girls don't want to change positions. It feels good from the beginning if you are really, really into it. I have like 6 different ways I do it, and it is always only between 1-3 I use at a time.
