The 70's, 80's & 90's had genuinely original films and great actors. Now the quality has consistently dropped and they seem to have run out of ideas.
There are many good filmmakers right now and enjoyable films today but none that have changed the way we view film as a medium or story telling significantly. It just doesn’t hit the same as it used to.
Ticket sales still haven't reached pre covid levels. Operating costs are continually increasing. Busts and flops are the new norm and blockbusters are the exception.
The whole industry is changing.

The fact that the two part Fast and Furious series finale hasn't come out yet means cinema has not yet reached its peak
 
Movies are no longer the pinnacle of media like it was in the eras you listed. Another factor in ticket sales is the enormous rise of at home streaming. Covid changed the game. TV is no longer a medium, it's a device.

The game isn't about acquiring good films, it's about filling your streaming platform library. Gone are the 8-12 week theater exclusive release. A good example was Horizon. Was supposed to get a long 2 part theatrical run, instead went to streaming in less than 2 weeks. Why would you go to the theater when they do shit like that?

The good news for film is the entry point for both creating and distributing is as low as it's ever been. There are gems out there.
 
I'd add the 2000's in there as well as part of the golden era.

Anything years past 2010 have 1-2 good movies tops

On the flip side... compare Game of Thrones to any show in the 90's and there is no comparison. Shows have gone way up.

They had gone way up. TV is shit now. Game of Thrones went down as the biggest letdown in television history. Series now are just serialized garbage where nothing happens for 7 and a half episodes, and then everyone dies in some weak attempt to wring out the viewer emotionally, but it doesn't matter because nobody cared about those characters to begin with.

TV now is just content. What was the last truly great show that came out? Compare any of the content being pumped out now (Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Knight Rider, Quantum Leap, the Twilight Zone, MacGyver, Walker: Texas Ranger, Roseanne, Lost in Space, Magnum P.I., the Equalizer, Matlock) to their original counterparts and they ALL come out shit.

Hell, compare House of the Dragon to Game of Thrones. It's just fucking shit. TV sucks now. Anyone who thinks it's good is just a retard zoomer or a braindead zombie who mindlessly eats shit like a pig.

Agree that today's shows are not as good as they were 10 years ago, but I'm just saying that shows were nowhere near as good as their movie counterparts in the 80's, 90's and 2000's.

I can tell you the EXACT day, nay, the exact moment it hit its peak. October 10, 1997. With this line:

 
It's fair to say television has taken over as the ideal way of seeing quality material.

And yes the 80s and 90s are the peak.
 
American films from the 50s and Japanese domestic dramas from the 60s are the peak of cinema imo. Wilder and Naruse is where it's at.

Most people can't direct or set a scene or do basic stuff like pacing. AI or cheaper special effects will allow more bigger budget action movies to be cheaper, but the others are pretty lean as it is.
 
I think these things can go in cycles and that movies can be very reactionary to what's going on socially. Things are getting spicy socially so that could lead to some good movies. Historically I think comfortable times tends to equal less pissed off people making good movies or writing the material you need to make great movies.

Like sure Vietnam sucked but we sure got some fucking great movies out of it.
