Hardest instrument to learn to play good

not everyone would agree with that assessment. Personally, playing for long periods, especially on a hard bench require a lot of endurance and stamina, even if it's just mental. Try holding your hands out like that and sitting upright for hours. It's not easy. Personally, between music and martial arts, it was always music that left me the most spent and exhausted. A good workout lasts maybe an hour, it's not like that with music. You can go until you get things right which takes a ton of time.

That's fine. To be fair I'm awful musically. I remember in primary school when my class was practicing for a performance the music teacher took my recorder and gave me....a triangle. Always admired people who commit and get great at it.

I know quite a few gamers that would love to hear that haha

Drummer here. Easiest?, imo, drums - for general level of playing. When I used to teach I could have a student playing beat#1, which you've heard in the majority of your favourite songs, within a minute or two, and they'll sound solid. I don't think you can do that as well or fast with another instrument.

That said, at top tier level of performance, elite of the elite, also the drums. It's cute when guitarist say the guitar, we expect that, but try using all four limbs, each limb doing completely independent rhythms, at high tempo, using odd times, while trying to reach all these various instruments, and not have it fall apart. Never mind the insane physicality it takes (they've done studies on this, it's wild). Watch a Terry Bozzio, or Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Trilok Gurtu, any of the Frank Zappa drummers, etc, at their peak, and it defies what's possible.

Guitar, Piano, Violin, etc, all use two limbs, with their playing area well within reach. I'm not saying these instruments have it easy, or unique hurdles specific to their instrument, but for the reasons I stated, I think it's the drum set.

Playing the drums with made up time signatures that only Danny Carey can play lol.

Depends on the person tbh. The "musical genius" can play multiple instruments with relative ease.

genius is such a loaded and overused word. Ray Charles would say, "watch your mouth" when people would call him a genius even though he was probably one, Prince on the other hand would ask bandmates, "are you a genius?" and when they said "no" he'd say, "Well, then write stuff down" but unspoken was that he didn't need to.

It's also nearly impossible to define. Elvis has been called a genius but he was very limited musically. Most people who'd use that label applied to him would use it to describe his ability as an entertainer primarily.

I guess if you use the term to apply to one percent, maybe it makes sense. Calling Muhammad Ali a genius of boxing would be accurate but that was only in boxing, he was a dull student and had a 78 IQ.

My dad and my kid learned to play guitar just by listening to others play. They are both really good. I can't play an instrument if my life depended on it.

Prince was one of a very few that could effortlessly play multiple instruments, write, master, then perform to perfection. He truly was the definition of a musical genius. I dont use it often but there are those times where its undeniable.

Kanye West....not a musical genius.

Paul Mccartney....Musical Genius.

absolutely, if the word is going to be used, it would fit Prince.

Fiddle is supposed to be hard.

Same with horn instruments. I mean it's difficult to even hit notes for many months.

My daughter has played the trumpet for about 5 years now in school and I
give her a hard time about it.

"It only has 3 buttons, it can"t be that hard to play."

Of course I know better but it's still fun to say.
Lol no doubt. I went in with the same mindset after allready being proficient at other instruments. Took me forever just to get the embouchure down and get a serviceable tone out of the thing. Made me appreciate Miles Davis even more.

Obviously, but if we're counting a drum kit as 'an instrument', I would lean towards that, as you're maintaining multiple rhythms at once. Idk how many a good drummer would be doing at once, each hand and foot is doing something different, you have to keep track of more than four things at once. Some drummers sing as well.

You know you have to maintain multiple rhythms at once in other instruments as well right? Like the piano for example. Polyrhythms aren't exclusive to the drums. Anyway the premise of the question of which instrument is hardest to learn is flawed. I'd say they are all equally difficult to be great at
