"Hard-Working American" Myth

Hard work just isn't the only component.

While I do feel the minimum is far too low, I still believe ability, knowledge and talent where it's needed should be rewarded.

Not that it always works that way either.

Hard work is what develops talent and accumulates knowledge.

Too many people act as if hard work starts when you reach the work force. That hard work in high school/college doesn't matter. It's the equivalent of saying that hard work only matters Wednesday through Friday of life, that you can be blas

Hard work gets people ahead.

No, statistically speaking inheritance, connections and social status get you ahead. In no other western industrialized country is the statistical connection between your parents wealth and your future income as strong as it is in the US.

I'm glad I didn't listen to people like you when I was 18. Hard work absolutely got me ahead.

But yeah, working hard mopping someone's floor isn't going to get you ahead. Gotta work towards a decent goal with your education.

If you business can't support the workers it needs to operate it's a shit business and it should die as soon as possible.

Spoken as someone who has never nor will ever run or manage anything.

Its kind of shocking the that "The Harper Government" even considers itself to be conservative given the temporary foreign workers program and over the top spending. Didn't Harper expand government when he first came in? Where is this "accountability" he raved about before being elected? Apparently staying quiet and going on trips to avoid facing the scandals is considered accountability to him.

Unfortunately, its a political disaster considering how bad Harper's government has been and yet he still seems like a better option compared to the Liberals and NDP. You'd think Trudeau would be pushing the accountability and transparency angle but instead he's playing rock-star by taking his clothes off at events, pushing for marijuana and telling anti-abortionists they can't be a part of his party.

I might consider voting NDP just to get the Harper Government out of there, Mulcair has looked good playing the opposition role, but its been easy when he's been handed one scandal after another.

Absolutely agree, current Canadian politics in a nut shell. Good post.

If you worked hard to think outside the box you wouldn't be bitching.

as I've already said, I already have a university degree and am currently getting another...
This thread isn't so much about me as it is everyone else.

All of which are acquired through...hard work.

Inheritance is such a cop out. Someone had to earn it before it became inheritance. And that someone worked hard.

Connections are made by getting out there and networking. And networking is work, the harder you work at it, the better your results.

Social status arises from both what you do and who you know. Both of which are strengthened by hard work.

You're worrying about everyone else? Why can't they just do what you did?

Are they particularly incapable? Are you particularly special that your efforts can't be duplicated?

education doesn't always help, watch here if you want to find out why.

Yeah, that's why I double majored in bio and chem. You know, useful stuff that provides value.

"B-b-but those subjects are hard and I need to party down".

Tough shit.

My memory is rather eidetic in that I can study anything for like an hour at most and remember pretty much everything which has led to me getting above 90's in every class based on multiple choice questions while barely studying for anything.

Other than that, I also previously had wealthy family that could pay for my education. I don't anymore and now I have to work in order to pay interest on my student loans, which in turn divides my attention, more stress, which leads to more sicknesses and slightly lower grades, etc.

And I worry about everyone else because I know many have it worse than I did and that when I am in a better position I will certainly help them more.

I've known a lot of homeless (volunteered at an overnight center) and they all have stories about how they were screwed over. I have never met one who was legitimately trying not to work, and survive by collecting coins on the sidewalk.

In that video one of the subjects has a masters in engineering. Are you going to tell me engineering is useless and provides no value?

Lots of schools need good math teachers.

Adaptability is the key to success. I'm sure with his background, it wouldn't take him long to become certified as an actuary. But I guess it's just easier to sit around crying woe is me than actually adapt.

the 600 in electronics is not whats keeping people behind the threshold of being rich beyond their wildest dreams.

I don't understand why this even needs explaining to people...

Its like when they bitch and moan about welfare when corporate welfare is much higher and lines the pockets of billionaires with middle class families incomes.

And this is why you suck at life and will continue to suck at life. Rather than listen and receive advice from successful people, you'd prefer to listen to other blue collar losers who tell you to be white and vote democrat.
