I can’t believe an organization if this size has commentary that’s this bad on a regular basis
Sanko and Felder are both very good
Cruz and Dc are both mediocre to bad
And Bisping is terrible, he’s actually getting worse as time goes on
 
You fellas are a rough crowd. I don’t pay a lot of attention to commenting on anything I’m watching, it’s just kind of background noise to me. I think they do just fine for the most past.

I Watch thé fights on mute now tbh. I especially cant stand DC. I respect the hell out of him for his career but he’s an insufferable shill. Joe has gotten worse too.

I never thought I’d say this but bring back Goldberg.

Not watching as much as before, or not watching as carefully/intently/studiously as before. Perhaps they're being fed more things they need to say nowadays vs the past.

In the past, it seemed like he used to have more of a connection to the fighters. Not sure if that's changed or what, but it seems to me like he's more detached from the sport as a whole. Which is understandable, there's so many events and fighters now, he's a busy guy.

Yeah you're probably right. That supports the notion he should move on, and leave it to someone whose whole life/livelihood revolves around the sport.

The only trick with that though is if it is someone who is DEPENDENT on the sport (ie: dependent on Dana's paycheck) they will have no integrity/be compromised. As an example, Dom's absolutely dogshit propaganda commentating at UFC 229.

In a perfect world there'd be both: a commentator that is more that a paid propagandist peon (Joe fits that) but ALSO totally invested (Joe doesn't fit that).

You raise a good issue on the topic of what the UFC wants to promote. I feel like this dynamic was very obvious (and fun) between Goldberg/Rogan, which contributed to their great chemistry.

Goldberg was the obvious UFC stooge; he'd shill for Corn Nuts or Bud Light or whatever. Rogan would sometimes mock these things amid calling the fight. It was like both the organization and the fans were represented in the booth.

I don't think they should move on from Joe. I don't think he's at his best, and probably never will be again. But he brings excitement and seems to help generate reactions from the other commentators (the UFC booth reaction memes for example). There's nobody else to replace what he brings to the table.

I'm not sure what the answer is, really. I feel like DC is regularly involved enough that the UFC could put some "pressure" on him to take his job a bit more seriously. He's not incapable of good commentary, he just needs more guidance, maybe?

You also have to consider that it could be a difficult job. You call every second of every major PPV for over 20 years, you aren’t going to get it right every time. It’s likely that our views from home are better at times than what they are seeing cage side.

If he’s a mouthpiece for the UFC, it’s unrealistic to think they’ll pay someone else a substantial amount of money to NOT be their mouthpiece. Dominic Cruz and DC are terrible. Anik is hit and miss for me. Not a fan of Lionheart. Joe isn’t above criticism, but if not him, then who? And what are your expectations for this individual?

You have to have a strong ego to be an elite commentator, but that same ego prevents you from seeing yourself the way others see you. The Dom Cruz’s, DC’s, Anik’s, the guys at the top of the mountain, they’re performing at a different level than you.

Honestly I think he used to be really passionate about taking the sport seriously and getting the athletes the respect they deserve. Go back 20 years and you’re gonna be hard pressed to find a match Joe commentates where he goes off on a tangent for more than a couple seconds or a fighter that he hasn’t either seen before or at least asked around about to get some info.

In 2004 he felt like the cool guy at the party who lived and breathed this sport and just wanted to spread his knowledge as much as possible. Now he’s the guy who’s carrying on about other things and constantly taking away from the action by stepping in front of the tv to get more snacks every 5 minutes.
