Joe has smoked himself stupid and is also too rich to care about commentary.
Nah it’s not dumb. He did it. He put him down.During the promo for Rountree there was a voice over him saying Rountree KOd one of the best kickboxers alive at the time. I figured that was either AI or they just read him dumb lines to say for it.
But then Rountree is walking out and he said it again haha.
Saki was not one of the greatest kickboxers alive when Rountree beat him hahaha. So dumb.
Not watching as much as before, or not watching as carefully/intently/studiously as before. Perhaps they're being fed more things they need to say nowadays vs the past. How do you come out of your prime commentating? I don't get it. I understand the metrics of having less explosion and speed etc that makes athletes decline. But I don't understand why Joe has "checked out" (he has) and what the actual cause of it is.
Is it a cognitive thing? He seems fine on his podcast so I don't think so. Or is it a boredom thing that he just doesn't care?
Yeah you're probably right. That supports the notion he should move on, and leave it to someone whose whole life/livelihood revolves around the sport. Not watching as much as before, or not watching as carefully/intently/studiously as before. In the past, it seemed like he used to have more of a connection to the fighters. Not sure if that's changed or what, but it seems to me like he's more detached from the sport as a whole. Which is understandable, there's so many events and fighters now, he's a busy guy.
You raise a good issue on the topic of what the UFC wants to promote. I feel like this dynamic was very obvious (and fun) between Goldberg/Rogan, which contributed to their great chemistry.Yeah you're probably right. That supports the notion he should move on, and leave it to someone whose whole life/livelihood revolves around the sport.
The only trick with that though is if it is someone who is DEPENDENT on the sport (ie: dependent on Dana's paycheck) they will have no integrity/be compromised. As an example, Dom's absolutely dogshit propaganda commentating at UFC 229.
In a perfect world there'd be both: a commentator that is more that a paid propagandist peon (Joe fits that) but ALSO totally invested (Joe doesn't fit that).
Schaub: You really think you can compete with someone like Jimmy Smith or DC in commentary?Maybe one day Schaub will pull an uno reverse card on joe during a podcast.
Honestly I think he used to be really passionate about taking the sport seriously and getting the athletes the respect they deserve. Go back 20 years and you’re gonna be hard pressed to find a match Joe commentates where he goes off on a tangent for more than a couple seconds or a fighter that he hasn’t either seen before or at least asked around about to get some info. How do you come out of your prime commentating? I don't get it. I understand the metrics of having less explosion and speed etc that makes athletes decline. He's wobbly already! His leg is compromised![]()
