Social Greta Thunberg Megathread

I got you, that's a fair point. I think it's fair for her to fight for something to be done about it, she's not writing the policy itself.

I wouldn't call a 16 year old a child, but I wouldn't call them an expert in anything either. I think she has a right to her voice if it resonates with people. The real discussion is what is she wrong about.

This is why I respect the hell out of you as s poster.

When an artist or activist is nothing more than a corporate image created and marketed by a huge PR firm they are not genuine and probably never were. Activism has become very trendy, marketable and profitable these days.

Especially when your activism aligns with with large international power.

Based on what? Other than reading prepared speeches. Whether she wrote them or not isn't the point I'm trying to make. Did she graduate college at 14, done some type of groundbreaking research etc. Im just curious what gives people this assumption thats she a child prodigy.

nobody thinks she is a prodigy. She is an activist and apparently a good one.

She's 16, she looks 10 because she has some kind of disease. Wiki says she stopped eating for a while due to her mental problems, that's an explanation of why she's shorter than 5'(Swedish women are around 5'6").
There is a common fallacy called an ad hominem argument. In other words, you shouldn't dismiss an argument because the person uttering it is bad, not an expert etc. Of course, that's in pure logic, in practice you shouldn't listen to bums.
About Thunberg, I don't really care she's not an expert, I was willing to listen to the argument and it's not an argument at all. She is just saying we should do something because global warming is bad.
I guess that's true but what? Let's all stop using fossil fuels? Let's stop modern agriculture and cultivate the fields with oxen? Let's just allow nature to take over?

It looks like a case of mass hysteria, a bunch of people are concerned about something, they don't know how to solve it and decided to follow a mentally unstable kid as their savior.

It's actually an interesting dilemma, that of raising people out of poverty into the middle class by growing trade and economy (helping them!), and the necessary amount of increased consumption that requires.

If the concern is that people are going to die and be miserable by the millions from global warming, how does that balance with the millions who are miserable due to poverty?

If you cut development you are taking the path of more poverty, but development is bad for the environment.

But one is guaranteed to help people (economic growth) and one may or may not hurt people (human contribution to climate)

Anyone who echoes the lefts views is a prodigy in their eyes. This girl has bigger issues and climate or “ collapsing” ecosystems isn’t one of them..
She has a full set of teeth, is literate, and can speak in complete sentences. She's got more going for her than 90% of conservatives already...

One of the advantages of those developing countries is they form around modern technology, so a less developed country may have be surprisingly efficient or environmentally friendly. They aren't held back by an economy or infrastructure that relies on outdated energy sources and have more room to take risks and adopt tech that isn't perfected yet.

Focusing on the environment doesn't mean we stop trying to solve the rest of the problems we face, it doesn't mean we stop trying to thrive. It just means we do so in a more stable way for long term benefits.

Lmao you keep on telling yourself that if it helps..

They can fast track in a lot of developmental aspects due to the advancement made by others, but you can't get around that people want to consume which is part of that middle class lifestyle. They want cars, they want to be able to travel, they want to buy TVs and computers and extra clothes, etc. And most people are not going to care about the environment as much as those who have lived in relative luxury for longer and can afford to entertain themselves with such things.

Of course none of that means we don't try to still focus on the environment, but the dilemma remains in terms of how to really help people.

Just because she's a child doesn't mean she has nothing worth to say. She's going to be an adult in 7-8 years. I respect her views even if she's a child. Some children are ahead of their age when it comes to maturity. I believe she's one of them.
She reached the age of consent/adulthood in Sweden over a year ago...weird, I know, but just saying.

All that underlined stuff is just plain dumb

Did you even read anything I posted? You think this part I underlined is dumb?:

"man has a duty of veneration toward nature and the natural. Nature is not something to be fought, conquered and changed according to any human whims." (from post #552)

Lmao you keep on telling yourself that if it helps..
The anti-climate change arguments are so dumb and transparent. It's not really even a two-sided debate anymore.

It must frustrate you that a child can cut through your bullshit so easily.

Listen moron I’ll clear this up for you in a way even a child can understand. The climate has always changed since the earth was formed. The planet overall has changed in ways you can’t even comprehend obviously. You wanna parade this challenged child around to further your agenda go ahead. Fact is this although you may have support for your crap it pales in comparison to the support you don’t have. If the last 30 years hasn’t proven that nothing I say is gonna get through to idiots like yourself. Our effect on the climate is basically an unmeasurable amount..Go hit the stab proof knife thread it’s more your speed.

Something to think about is that while it may or may not hurt people it's also mostly irreversible. We could stop development until we have clean tech. It's very unlikely we could ever revert CO2 concentrations if for example Africa started to develop as China or India.

Oh boy, this is going to be great...

The climate has always changed since the earth was formed. The planet overall has changed in ways you can’t even comprehend obviously.
No, I think I can comprehend the ways in which the planet has changed. I know it must frustrate you that they teach evolution and climate change in almost every developed country in the world, except for some conservative parts of the USA.

So basically you're an ignorant hayseed, and you're proud of it for some dumb reason. No wonder you hate Greta Thunberg, she makes you feel bad about yourself.

Yeah this is way more ugly than it needs to be. It wasn't that they just disagreed with her though, they were ignorant and tasteless with their attacks on her. One side will say they were tasteless attacks, one side will say they're not allowed to criticize at all.
