Social Greta Thunberg Megathread

There are far more than Bill Nye foaming at the mouth. Congrats on the ability to recognize that there is a majority of people coming to an agreement on the issue of climate change.
I take public transportation to work . I used to work for Tesla and devoted a lot of time and energy to the cause. I now work for a medical research institute because it fits more with my current goals. I compost and recycle, the energy I consume on a daily basis is 90% renewable source, and I'm going to vote green. I put my money where my mouth is.
You're wasting your time. We'll all be dead in 12 years...remember?

Right. So what is your point? Perhaps she's on the more severe end of the spectrum than dan akroyd.

What exactly is the point you're trying to prove?

Like with HIV, you'd consider someone close to having AIDS with magic Johnson?
What's the point you're trying to prove? You said you could see her being used because your family member is low functioning. I'm just saying there are high functioning people too who are productive and live their own lives.

There's clearly a lot of ignorance around it, maybe not by you but by others. We have a few people saying anyone on the spectrum is retarded. I'm just clarifying things.

She deserves an Emmy for her acting, I'll give her that.

Regardless, I don't know what her or these protesters expect the dear old government to do when 90 percent of the pollution comes from the products that we all use on a daily basis.

Using fossil fuels will always be part of life. They want the government to do something, meanwhile those protesting are helping pump billions of dollars into the very companies they protest. You can push for solar and wind power, natural gas over coal, geothermal HVAC, better recycling programs..... and we should. But lets not act like we ever going to stop using petroleum.

Petroleum should only ever be used for synthetic products, especially in medicine. More needs to be done to integrate non-petroleum sources of energy into energy production, and in energy storage solutions. I agree humans will more than likely never end their dependency on oil 100%, but the need to scale that dependence downward is dire.

what's your proposal?

Thats exactly what im talking about. With some forms of autism/mental illness. You can push a topic like climate issues, tell them about the destruction, the death, the end of the world etc.and they will become so consumed, it seems they really are passionate about something. But, in reality its just a form of their obsession that comes from the mental illness.
Sounds like a certain faction of a certain political party lol

Right, but your post was a quote of mine. I never called anyone retarted, and I know it can be a horrible affliction. I was speaking about my family member and how they can become obsessive, to the point you can put any topic in their head and live their life according to it.
All I said, was that could be the case with her. Not, it is the case.

That's cool. Like I said, I'm just clarifying for others that there are people like your family member and there are others who function well on their own.

There are people here who will read your post and then validate their beliefs that everyone on the spectrum is retarded and easily manipulated. I'm not saying you said that, just read back a few pages.

Holy hell that speech was BAD.

Very much reminded me of Dwight Schrute doing his Hitler-like speech.

It really is disgusting they used a retarded girl to further a bullshit agenda.

what's your proposal?

Stop subsidizing oil companies. Subsidize energy renewable companies, for one.
Kill coal, put it out of its misery.
Tax carbon emissions for industries. Use the money generated to fund renewable energy R&D and infrastructure reform.
Add an additional fee to registering gas powered cars. Further incentivize electric or hydrogen purchased vehicles with a 5 to 10% mail-in-rebate program.
Stop subsidizing corn farmers who produce cattle feed, thereby increasing cost of red meat and lowering consumption of the product.

That,s just a start.

I got you, read back some and I can see your point.

Man, I'm getting tired of doing this but I'll go over it one more time for you because I'm a Rancid fan.
  1. Girl with Asperger's develops anxiety over climate issues
  2. Begins to get obsessed, and devours news about it. Wonders why people arent doing more if the planet is in jeopardy.
  3. Thinks she should protest, and skips school to strike at the Swedish Parliament.
  4. Parents are concerned, previously did not encourage her obsession but want to be supportive. They are worried about her mental state because of her Asperger's.
  5. Continues to strike. Other students join her.
  6. People notice and post about it on social media.
  7. Local news catches on and reports on her.
  8. People are fascinated and her popularity grows.
  9. Reaches national and then international news.
  10. Organizes an international student protest day on March 15, 2019. Says she was inspired by the student organized protest March For Our Lives. Over 2000 cities on every continent participated. Estimated 1.5 millions students.
  11. Speaks in front of US Congress, absolutely humiliates and silences them.
Or, in other words, mom & pops fed her a lot of progressive thoughts onto her and she got anxious, now they want to milk it as a good thing.

She migh be really concerned and want to express her voice and be heard, like a million other teenagers, but she might also not want it at all and be on that exact same spot as their parents control her, see?
Now look at how progressive views works over people, i.e. either you agree with them or you're automatically ostracized to Trumpland, what's your guess over that girl?

Using arguably handicapped teenagers to sell your point of view should never be seen as a something correct.

But that's only my opinion, I like data more than I like moms crying on TV (which I don't like at all, btw)

Still, thanks for your Rancid-based effort, fair point lol

When I came into the office today my boss asked "How's it going?", I said with a horrible fake accent "I shouldn't be here, I should be in school!"...I thought it was hilarious, he did not.

Fair, but what about airplanes? I don't see how anyone can develop an electric powered jet that wouldn't crash and burn. Even if you drive an electric car.. plenty of that car is made out of plastic and to make one car tire requires seven gallons of petroleum. So even if you drive a Tesla, you're burning 28 gallons of petroleum ever time you replace a set.

Think about the millions of cell phones and computers that are made each year that people aren't going to stop using.

To your point, think about the massive strides we've already made over the past 40-50 years. Even gas powered cars put out next to zero emissions. Long gone are the days that people could sit in the garage, start up their car and die from the exhaust fumes. Even jet engines on planes put out a small fraction of emissions that they did and use way less fuel than the engines from the 60s.

I agree, I'd like to see more alternative sources of energy. But I know that solar power on homes is just growing and growing in Southern California. Wind farms continue to be built. Even massive energy companies like Duke have shut down coal fired plants and replaced them with natural gas.

The list goes on and on. But then when I see people like this Thunberg chick crying like we haven't been doing anything.. it makes me cringe. It's all hype and alarmism. We've been drastically reducing our carbon footprint for a long time now. And one thing that people just don't seem to put enough emphasis on..... planting trees.

How is she handicapped?

what's the economics on this?

what's the economics on this?

I mean... what's the economics on the ocean losing its capacity to produce oxygen, which is actually 50 to 85% or the planet's entire oxygen production (actually due to phytoplankton), as an effect of climate change due to human activity?

lol hadn't actually heard her speak until today, just saw pics.
I fucking HATE the environment now.
