NFL Green Bay Packers 2023 Differences between now and 2008

lol, are you me?

I've said it before, Barry isn't a defensive genius, but neither was Capers. But when Capers had the pieces he had two top 5 units in 2009/2010 and when he got Peppers in 2014, that unit become a championship defense down the stretch.

And that's exactly what's going to happen unless Gute drafts some dudes ready to play in 2024 or someone like Van Ness is a monster in his second season. LaFluer better choose his guy wisely this time.
It was definitely not only a Joe Barry problem, but good coaches can also elevate the talent of a team and a lot of other defenses have less talent, even including injuries to Jaire for example. Many already pointed out, the defense only got better once LaFleur said he'd get involved, which also isn't a great sign and can't be a long term solution. Apparently they might even keep him around at a lesser position, which would be cool IMO as he's very well liked and can be a good position coach.

Job is way more attractive considering the offense is set and is functioning. The FA money will certainly go to defense, a Safety is most likely I guess, and the majority of draft picks will also go to the defense.

Won't pretend that I can judge candidates lol, I think a younger, hungry coach who isn't dead set on one style would fit.

Packers also fired their S&C coach, cleaning house apparently. :D

We shoulda won that fucking game.

Should have won the divisional round game in 2013 against the Niners.
No doubt they should have beat the Seahawks in the 2014 NFC title game and probably win the SB that year.
Rodgers late game heroics should have come with a win in the 2015 divisional round against the Cardinals.
If not for the refs and the league wanting Brady to win the SB in Tampa; the Packers should have beat the Bucs in the 2020 NFC title game.
2021 will never make sense to me. Ever. They should have won that one too.

We can even go back to the Favre era and they should have won those playoff games in 2007 and 1998. The one where Jerry Rice clearly fumbled.

Now you're just depressing me. Thanks.

Barry's a cancer that would've been removed a while ago if he wasn't LaFleur's buddy

It's currently a dream gig for any DC. Offense is stacked with talent, so just do your job on your side of the ball and you'll have success.

Yeah about the special teams tho...

A coach has to be able to adjust the style of play to fit the players they have rather than trying to find players to fit the system.

I have a similar optimism today as I had in 2008 - 2014, or so… then something changed. I’ll get attacked, but my honest observation was that Rodgers kinda became a quitter in playoff games. Some of it, was being too cautious…gotta get rid of that football. 2012 in particular, I started to see a change..very ‘clutchy.’ And at that point, the scheme had gotten so pass-happy, it was hard to stop. Ever since then, been tough to watch in the playoffs. Really excited about next year, now. Let the good times roll.

The last time Rodgers had that dog in him was 2016. The run the table stretch. His play that year reminded me of the 2010 run they had. Shame that team literally ran out of bodies by the time they faced the Falcons.

I think around the time that 2019 season came the guy was just burned out from all the failure the team had in the playoffs. You could see it on his face when Linsley and him fucked up the snap and fumbled the ball in the NFC title game against the Niners.

He had some renewed motivation because of the Love pick in 2020 and had a season that rivaled his 2011/2014 seasons. Some people forget the Packers beat the number 1 scoring defense in the Rams that year in the divisional round. But yeah, Rodgers had that same look of despair again, this time against the Bucs. Dude went 33 - 48 for 346 yards 3 tuds 1 pick. And this is without his left tackle against that Bucs front. And still lost. That's unreal.

By the time the 2021 divisional round arrived I think some of his fire was gone and he just got old. He should retired after that season, but I don't blame him for still trying to chase that elusive second SB.

Hopefully Love can get us at least one ship.

I think Bukowski talked about it this week, the Packers got way too cute during some of the prime years of Rodgers. Solely draft and develop didn't cut it and sure as hell won't cut it in the modern day NFL. Like he and others said, the window starts with the new Love deal which will likely get done until free agency I'd guess. Don't push too much cap into future years, keep that 2025 cap situation rather nice, but also definitely go out and adress weaknesses, sign a good Safety even if it's not Winfield (too much $), maybe sign a corner or another O-Liner etc. Get the team in a shape that the draft is about ADDING and not filling desperate needs (need is always a consideration, but it can't be that you have to pass on better prospects for a need, see King, Kevin). Maybe trade up in the draft this year to get your guy, maybe you don't actually need two 2nds and 3rds when you can get 3 of your favorite guys.

Absolutely agree! Here the known interviews so far:

Three rather interesting guys and Staley lol.

If they hire Staley somebody might burn LaFleur's house down
Most candidates are interesting so far, I highly doubt that it will be Staley. Now they addiotinally interviewed a Ravens guy (Dennard Wilson). So 4 of the 5 intrerviews go in a certain direction (young, fresh, experience in different systems, mostly never been DC yet etc.), only exception is Staley, that's why I think it will be one of the others. There might have been other unreported interviews, tho.

EDIT:

Wilson's pretty interesting, was reading about him before. I dunno much about most of these guys but he sounds good at least.

I'd guess Wilson and Parker are the favs. Babich is off the market, he got promoted to DC by the Bills.

We will probably know by Friday, the dominos are falling slowly but surely.

Nice to swim them making such a big splash in the coaching market!

Oof, have to read up on him. Would have liked someone else tho (Parker).
