All I know is it would be between these 3:

Kurosawa
Hitchcock
Coppola

Kubrick
Kurisawa
Fritz Lang
Hitchcock

And when it comes to B-movies, Cirio H. Santiago

Just kidding. He sucks.

Was gonna like this until I read the spoiler.

Someday Refn's name will be among the greatest.

I have seen four of Refn's films, and I do think of him as a great filmmaker. I don't know about putting him up there with guys like Spielberg, Scorsese and Fincher, though.

2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Barry Lyndon
Shining
Full Metal Jacket

tough pick

Spielberg uses Cameron for toilet paper.

Let's compare their greatest films...

Terminator 2, Terminator, Titanic, and Aliens.

To Indiana Jones 4, A.I., Munich, and The Terminal.

Fuck me, you're right. Spielberg is unquestionably the better director.

Spielberg legit pisses on Cameron

Kubrick for me.

A Clockwork Orange, Shining, Full Metal Jacket, 2001 etc... just can't beat 'em.

I do like a good Scorsese movie though, like Goodfellas.

I think it's pretty hard to compare the two. Speilburg definitely has a stronger body of work and has been much more prolific, but he's a guy who's strongest films have been written by other people, whereas Cameron tends to control everything to large degree and force innovation to create his visions, so the dude is only putting out one movie every 5 years or so.

Obviously writing isn't directing, but I think that when people colloquially speak about a film director, it usually carries an implication that you're talking about someone who's a driving force type of filmmaker more akin to a show runner in television.

If I had to vote for only one person it would be Cameron, but I also really enjoy some of Spielberg's work and Carpenter's work. Those would likely be my three favorite directors of all-time.
