I dont care how much people diss him - Mike Tyson was pretty much the best ever. Seriously - how much chance would have ANYBODY had against him in his prime when Cus D'Amato (RIP) was his manager?!

Easy to diss him now that he is old and a has-been but without doubt he was the best fucking ever.
 
Think about it - in his prime Tyson had

1. Best lateral and head motion
2. Best punches from multiple angles (jabs, head and body hooks and DEVASTATING uppercuts)
3. Second to none killer instinct
4. Ability to close in space quickly and efficiently
5. Unbelievable raw talent

He racked up a 42-0 despite being physically shorter and a much lesser reach than the majority of his opponents.

The only thing (unfortunately probably the most important) fucked about him was his head; Cus (RIP) and Kevin Rooney managed to help Mike keep his act together. Exit Kevin Rooney - Mike went down in a ball of flames in a hurry. What a waste of talent - absolute waste.

Mike Tyson had been a professional for only 8 months when Cus D'Amato died in Nov 1985.
At the time of Cus' death, Tyson was still fightin' no-hopers and never-wases with not a single ranked fighter on his entire 11 fight resume.

Tyson won a version of the title in Nov 1986, but many point to 1988 and the Spinks fight as Tyson's peak and also when he won the real LINEAL title.
1988 is a long ways from 1985 and Cus' death in fighter years and development.


The first time I ever saw Tyson was on tv the month AFTER Cus died, Dec 1985, the Sam Scaff fight, and Tyson looked amazing.
Yeah, Tyson the contender was just getting known in Dec 1985, but the old man had already passed by then. Tyson looked better AFTER Cus was gone, and against better competition too.

Tyson sure was something in his prime though. 1986, 1987, 1988.
 
Tyson was certainly one of the best sluggers or swarmers of all time. I would've liked to see him go head to head with a prime Larry Holmes or even Wlad. Guys with great jabs who could keep Tyson outside but could also punch could beat Tyson. Lennox also had a great jab, it would've been a great battle if we're talking prime vs. prime, and provided that Lennox would actually pull his jab out of his ass and use it.

Call me a goof but since this is a P4P discussion, I think that a 220lb Tommy Hearns beats Tyson as well. Not only did Hearns have power, but his speed was unmatched. He was one of the few guys who could reach and still KO someone, unlike Tyson or Tua who of course relied on the short inside power shots. The overhand right that Hearns KO'd Shuler with was one of the best improvised punches I've ever seen, and I think he catches Tyson with it more often than not.

I don't have a problem with Sandy being overshadowed.....He caught Willie as Willie was heading for the exits.....Sandy was a dirty SOB that relied on alot of wrestling, clinching, shoulders and elbows to get the job done.....Even referees were intimidated by him and let him get away with his shit.

^^ What he said......that's right on the money. Both great fighters. Pep a hair better, their fights together notwithstanding.

Ali could never really beat Norton either. Taking nothing away from Kenny, a terrific heavyweight, but he was no Ali.
And Barkley no Hearns.
 
I wouldn't even ranks him as top 10 hardest puncher. He has speed to his punches. He doesn't have George Foreman thud type of punches. It's like a corvette vs. mack truck.

Tyson has the best POWER of all time hands down, but his obvious inabilities in other areas takes him off the all around list of goats. Hardest hitting heavies? Hes numero uno, but here, just another overused name.

I believe Earnie Shavers is the hardest punching human being of all time, Ali and Foreman agree with me.
 
And more importantly, Larry Holmes, who fought both of them.
 
as far as P4P hardest hitters id say Shavers, Julian jackson or foreman
