Greatest boxer ever?

please elaborate. well he was banned in what 67-70 roughly. so he was 25 when banned and like 28 when he returned. that is 3 years inactivity. sure he was training but think of what 3 years would mean for a fighter nowadays. he was hitting his prime and when he returned he was not the same fighter. he had lost much of his lateral quickness if you dispute this please go back and watch some fights. watch his last fight before being banned and then watch his fight with jerry quarry. different fighter.

He was in his prime and had been since minimum the first Liston fight. He was a different fighter against Quarry not only due to rust, but Jerry was better than the guys he was fighting prior to his exile, like an ancient Zora Folley, Ernie Terrell, and Karl Mildenberger for example. He had two fights prior to his first fight with Frazier and was still in his prime after having worked off the rust. He fought many fights in his prime.
 
James Toney is the greatest boxer ever hands down! Every single fight he comes in in great shape and looks to take the other guys head off! Never tries to eek out a long boring points win! And the level of competition!? Forget about it! This is clearly why boxing is still so alive and kickin'!

Jerry Quarry was better than George Chuvalo? How come Chuvalo dusted him, then? Quarry was so out of it that he couldn't follow the count. And no way Quarry was better than Sonny Liston. I might even take the Patterson of 1965 over the Quarry of 1972.
 
it has nothing to do with his opponent. his footspeed diminished. his lateral movt. was not the same. you must not box or you would understand what 3 years gone does to you.

Quarry was far from out of it and simply got lost on the count. He was clearly in posession of all of his faculties and clearly beating Chuvalo in that fight.

I never said he was better than Sonny, I gave examples of guys I thought Jerry was better than, Sonny is probably the only one I don't think he was better than of Ali's resume prior to his exile. Patterson is iffy, but I still think Jerry was a better fighter.

3 years when you're going from 30-33 maybe. He was still under 30 when he came back and very fresh. He also took tune up fights against guys stylisticly perfect to warm him up for Joe prior to their bout. They were tough guys who came forward who could take a punch. It was smart match making to get Ali back in rythym, and he went into the 15th with Bonavena.

Ali hardly lost anything at the point he came back.

It actually wasn't that funny just because of how non-relevant the former WBA welterweight titlist is. If you brought up a name like Joe Calzaghe it would be funny though.

3 years out at any age will KILL.

That's like sating 3 years at the bottom of a lake for a toyota echo is worse than for a honda civic. I don't give a fck what your drivin, 3 years is gonna add rust!

You cant take the same punches you would have 3 years ago, and thats true for a 22 year old, age has an effect, but is clearly not the only factor, trust me, I box.
