Greatest boxer ever?

Sugar Ray Robinson for me, without a doubt.

Rocky Marciano has gotta be up there too.

The Brown Bomber or Marciano. I prefer Louis.

i'm only 19. i've watched his fights on ESPN Classics, i've seens tapes of his fights. I've seen him fight, he is the only HW boxing champ to retire undefeated. He won 44 of 49 fights by Knock Out, thats a 88% knockout rate.

The guy was good, i think he beats any HW fighter from any era in their primes. I think he beats Tyson, Ali, Frazier, Liston, Louis, Foreman, ect...ect...ect..

This gave me a great laugh.
Sorry guys, I havent read through the thread yet, I had to respond to this.
Sonny Liston would have beat Rocky Marciano like he stole something.
Anyway I know I sound trendy, but Sugar Ray Robinson gets my vote.

Ali was the media's darling and politics definitely helped him out. Greb had talent.
Your argument that Ali got away with it because the media liked him is weak, since the media hated Greb. In fact, it's extremely rare for someone to get disqualified for fighting the way Ruiz does. The only time a fighter gets disqualified for holding is if he's not fighting in the clinch.

I dont know why everyone feels the need to argue a moot point like this.

It obvious who the greatest boxer in history is, no question, end of thread.

Having Marciano's name anywhere near the Sugar Ray Robinson spectrum is laughable. Outright blaspheme to be honest.

top 10 heavyweight great, not top 30 All Time Great

I think Robinson pales in comparison to Muhammad Ali, even pound for pound. There were so many fighters that Robinson ducked. He really played the game and fought nothing but white fighters, for the most part. Ali took on every fighter who was remotely deserving of a shot, and won.

Basically, almost every top contender who wasn't a white American.

Sullivan wasn't the first World Heavyweight Champion. There were three title lineages out there, two American and one English. Sullivan held one of the American lineages, and Jem Mace held the other two. Mace lost to Charlie Mitchell in 1890, who Sullivan had beaten in 1882.

Some argue that the first true World Heavyweight Championship bout was between Mitchell and Sullivan in 1888. Although the fight ended in a 39-round draw, Mitchell dominated the bout, and was on his way to winning when the bout was called due to rain. After beating Mace for his two lineages in 1890, Mitchell had a strong claim to the World Heavyweight Championship.

Jim Corbett became the first true World Heavyweight Champion by beating Sullivan in 1892 and Mitchell in 1894. Sullivan was no World Heavyweight Champion.

Thank you, Ive been waiting for someone to dispute the nut-hugging style comments most Robbinson fans posted with. "Robbinson hands down, end of discussion, why even argue?" It makes me crazy, thanks for finally shedding some light on what makes The GOAT great!

Statistically Rocky Marciano would have to be the greatest. Undefeated, retired as champion, 88% knockout victories.

Ali claims the title of 'most important' boxer of all time in my opinion. He was more than a boxer and he came to stand for more than boxing. The same thing could be said about him as Marciano though.. (as well as guys like Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock etc...) I wonder how they would perform against top competition today (when they were in their primes of course)

Floyd Mayweather seems like a real legit modern day contender for GOAT. 12 years undefeated, 6 belts in 5 weight classes. Of course it's still 'too soon' to really consider him, but if he doesn't try to make a late comeback and screw it all up it will be hard to argue against him in a few years...

Damn, now that I think about it it's a hard question that doesn't have a good answer.

right now I've got to say Ali is still king
