Gordon Ryan explains why Sambo > BJJ in MMA

gordonryan.png
just FYI, Islam fought Davi Ramos and beat him, and Ramos is definitely world level jitsu guy

I really believe the most obvious answer is usually the correct one. Sambo guys beat BJJ guys in MMA because MMA and (combat) Sambo allow punches on the ground and BJJ doesn't.

Apparently the unwritten lesson here is that punching someone in the face while on the ground is kind of a big deal in combat.

Word on the street is that Gordon couldn't put his striking together.
Word on the street lol

I remember Gordon adding in striking sessions a few years ago, but he never fully committed to it

It comes down to Danaher wanting him to focus on elevating BJJ

If BJJ guys had Islam/Khabib level wrestling they would be fine. That’s the key difference IMO.

Plus it’s not like every Sambo guy is taking over, Abdulmanap’s fighters are taking over because he was years and years ahead of the game.

Sambo incorporates striking and wrestling, BJJ doesn't.

Sambo has methods to dictate the pace and style of the fight, BJJ doesn't.

Sambo is a better base for MMA.

True. I don't think the problem is BJJ itself. Well maybe some of the mentality only rather than technique... the first weakness is conceiving of guard as a neutral position (it isn't because of gravity + punches) and the second is the lack of emphasis on offensive GNP which is a massive massive deal in human combat.

This is coming from a BJJ guy.

It would seem quite accurate especially since mma has punches to the head that bjj competition and wrestling don't allow. The takedown and top game with punches takes away much of the bjj advantage for submissions, and as Machachev showed, their submission game on top usually takes the advantage. I would like to see bjj guys and mma guys train with world class wrestlers because that is the weakness now. Remember when bjj was the absolute king in early ufc then, the only people. who challenged them and changed the game were.... wrestlers. Bjj'ers did overcome this wrestling advantage but the Dagestan guys are world class grapplers and it will take that skill level to prevent their domination. But also, it does seem that there only a few who are that level from dagestan, for whatever that's worth.

Combat Sambo is totally different sport than BJJ. It's actually full contact sport, the same as Pankration

100% agree

The Gracie’s whole strategy for MMA was super dumb in hindsight… it’s like they went out of their way to not learn wrestling and hold onto just knowing crappy Judo and guard pulling lol. That JRE podcast with Rickson showed how stubborn they can be with that approach.

Now that American BJJ has kinda taken over, and there is a new direction in the sport, I think we will see some BJJ guys in 5-10 years with legit wrestling and high level BJJ.

Even at this past ADCC there were guys that could make a splash in MMA, they just don’t need to because they can make great livings doing BJJ.

I always said it was the closest thing to MMA without it being MMA.

...except that someone who achieved the heights of "bjj specialist" in his eyes would also have terrible hands, no elbows/knees/kicks, weak throws/takedowns, and zero footwork. not sure what his point is.
The whole comment is an apology for BJJ simply being less suited for mma and generally bjj guys being weaker than wrestlers

I tried, it's really not my calling I guess lol.
You practically nailed it, you're just not quite unsophisticated enough to truly pull off an expertly devised dumb post, that's not your fault though. With hard work, determination, and practice you can eventually reach your goal to sound dumber.

The man knows, now let's hear all the "expert" sherdoger takes that are inevitably incoming. ;)
Yes, let's take the BJJ guy's word as gospel, he seems unbiased. Especially loved the "no world level jiu jitsu guys" hot take that's obviously, objectively false.

All I'd have to do is follow Bryce Mitchell's Instagram lol.
