Rand Paul is one of the 47. Don't think he will be electable to the general public.

Just wanted to say hats off to T/S.
As an outsider looking in, the Republican race is extremely interesting to follow. I'm not sure who the Democrats would hope their ultimate opponents ends up being, but it's got me glued.

The answer is please please please please Ted Cruz. Though I'm warming up to Walker's unelectability. This is of the contenders, not the Carsons or Perrys.

One of 47 signing the Iran letter.

I for one would not want to be led by someone who believes foreign policy is a game, and I am sure Americans won't, either. Anyone having signed this inane letter will be out eventually.

Bush vs Clinton. It's inevitable simply because Democrats have nobody who can credibly challenge Hillary and the Republican options are so sad, getting worse and more ridiculous every four years.

It's horribly sad, but Bush is probably the best option for victory. It would create so much apathy with two dynasty candidates that the number of votes needed to win would be smaller and much more buyable. I could be wrong though, and the idea of another Bush in the White House could inflame the left and make them turnout. Same with the right and Hillary, perhaps, but I think most people liked Bill a lot more than her.

Also, I agree with you about the letter, but with the proper spin that can easily be looked at as a positive. Just need to keep the media crowing about how dangerous Iran is, and how weak Obama is for dealing with them.

It needs to be one hell of a spin, though. How could no deal better than a far-reaching deal with extensive IAEA inspection rights and transparency rules? Nobody has really talked about the alternative, which is, uh, starting war with Iran over...what exactly?

Yeah, I should have said it would be an easy spin for the right, it's not going to sway any Democrats or most independents. There is still a sizeable portion of the country that thinks we can just go win a war against Iran and fly off into the sunset, easy peasy. "We learned from the other two Wars!" Nope. Probably not. US history is full of us creating power vacuums and then getting mad when the crud gets sucked into them.

Well.... if we let the military actually fight and took off all the bullshit restrictions they have to follow, they would win easy peasy. But with all the red tape and rules of engagement, it's like sending in your best team with their hand tied behind their back. They can still get the job done with the other hand, but it makes it that much harder.

GOP Hawks Set to Ruin Rand Paul's Big Day
In the first salvo of the 2016 Republican ad wars, a conservative group is about to unleash a seven-figure ad campaign targeting Senator Rand Paul for being out of step with the party on Iran, just as he launches his presidential campaign.

The Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America, a 501(c)(4) group led by veteran Republican operative Rick Reed, will go live with its campaign against Paul on Tuesday, while the senator is in Louisville, Kentucky, announcing his presidential candidacy. The group will begin airing ads on broadcast TV, cable and the Web in several early primary states accusing Paul of being weak on Iran and tying him to the Barack Obama administration

^Paul was always going to be attacked for his FP so he shouldn't have even tried to tow the party hard line - signing the Iran letter, clapping like a seal for Bibi, spending more on defense etc. He should have offered an alternative in the primary to carve out a niche and offer something to separate himself from the other 10 or so candidates in a pretty stark and major way.

That was a strategic maneuver to expose both Cruz and Rubio for not being true fiscal conservatives. He will now use this in the debates, just watch.

Rand Paul just trolled the hell out of Cruz and Rubio on the defense budget

Because he's just saying what needs to be said, but once elected he'll be the "real" Rand they think they know and love.

Paul may not appeal to enough voters, but I don't think it will be because of a letter. We have a legislative branch of government. The 47 senators were elected by American citizens to represent them. Nothing in the letter was false. It simply stated fact.

Exactly.

He could have easily joined the 8 or so other Republicans that refused to sign the letter.

It's obvious he had to move to the right to be electable but he should have done it on other issues: the economy, the role of government, things like that. FP is one of THE major drawing points of libertarians. What next, he's going to go soft on marijuana legalization?

by saying "We should not pay to blow up bridges and rebuild them overseas, we should rebuild our own bridges"

Paul had nothing to gain by not signing that letter, he would have been beat over the head with that all primary season.

Everyone knows where he stands on FP
