Going Rogue

It only took my resting BP to get to 190/140 and me to pass out at dinner for me to start walking.

You win.

Good job on everything, kurt.

I really wish I had a treadmill so I can walk on it. My mother has recently signed up at planet shitness and I've really been debating going as her guest a couple times a week to use a treadmill. But I can't get myself to do it because it's planet fitness.

Sometimes I go walk around the track near my house but I get lazy with it and either not go, or half way through walking I realize I'm going really slow and feel like I'm wasting my time.

Thanks, Greg. I hear you on the Planet Fitness thing, but if you're just going to do some work that you'd otherwise be skipping, it shouldn't be so bad. A treadmill is a treadmill and I'm sure there's some eye candy there to keep you interested.

I came to the conclusion that I could afford to have much better endurance and cardiovascular fitness without sacrificing strength gains a while ago. That article made the issue seem a lot more pressing. I'm going to try adding in the 15 minute cool down on lifting days.

Wanting to do your best to ensure your health and being around to support your family doesn't sound crazy.

We're all going to turn into cardio bunnies thanks to liquid. I used to play soccer 2-3 times a week and at that point, I'm sure I was in good enough shape to not have to worry about anything. Lately, though, my only regular form of exercise has been lifting, so I guess it's time for some supplementation.

Once you're over 30 or so, getting back into decent cardio shape becomes much trickier. Enjoy the nasty surprise.

I didn't need to read that.

I guess I'll be hitting the bikes after lifting. (One of the only bright spots in my gym is their bikes.)

Or, I'll just strictly Oly lift...

Nice overhead up their, Kurt. How's the arm feeling?

What cooldown are you thinking of doing?

I only recently started the treadmill walking, but I noticed recently that I feel ready for another work set a bit quicker than before. I forgot to log it, but at first I thought it was just a combination of a good nights sleep and caffeine, but I didn't take any yesterday and still felt as though my rest periods were shorter with no ill effects.

You might be able to tactfully mooch treadmills off of friends/family that are moving, or otherwise do not want/need them anymore. I think 1 out of 3 American households has a treadmill or bike that is doing nothing more than collecting dust (statistic made up by me).

My family has been offered several, without even trying. Worth a shot.

Remember when everyone said that LSD was bullshit for fat loss and cardiovascular health even though powerlifters and bodybuilders had been doing it since the 1900's? lulz.

And there were no financial interests involved in that whatsoever...just some poor mistaken fitness professionals.

Oh, have you heard about my new E-book, "Nuclear Implosion X-Factor Training?" You have it for 39.95 if you scroll to the bottom of a LONG page with lots COLORFUL and BIG type...

It and diet is how I have lost all my weight experts be dammned. I always thought it worked even though people kept telling me to do sprints and intervals.

Not the whole thing, but I read enough to throw me into a cold sweat of fear. It’s all stuff I’ve read before, but for some reason, I had a “moment” this time and went into sudden onset panic right before I was getting ready to head off to the gym. I ran to the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face, and when I looked in the mirror, I was white as paper.

Goddammit.

*searches for liquid's post*

It'll be interesting to see how many Sherdog log sessions will be ending with "treadmill - 15 minutes" from here on out. The death scare topic has elicited more activity than my journal has seen in a long while.

Liquid! had shown me that over a year ago I think and I started doing it...I lasted about 2 weeks and dropped out of the habit.

I've been doing this for a while now. I am a trend setter, even though I got the idea from Donut.

Interesting discussion going on here (on "cardio issue") and I wanted to lay a comment as well.

As I see it there are obviously 2 sides of coin here: one being avoiding to damage heart/blood vessels by heavy lifting (to put it that way) and the other side being doing some regular "cardio" to help the heart out.

I have read that link posted by Liquid already earlier (in the first post of his log) but i have read also some other studies earlier. Basically "time under pressure" is very important factor in here. To put it simply: heavy singles are much better than sets with multiple reps (with heavier weights - there is obviously some kind of equation here), because you don't strain the system under to prolonged time.

Speaking of equation, it is obvious that max-singles (100% effort) also strains heart by elevating blood preasure over the hill, but 90% effort singles doesn't seem too strenuous.

You don't get much (if any) "conditioning" by doing low reps (singles/doubles), but you don't need to do any cardio to live long - there are bunch of people who never did any "cardio" yet lived + 100 years. And there are those who did it and still died younger (yeah, of heart failure also)

I don't want to say: "See Hepburn singles or oly lifting is better than 531 or any other program where you "max out" on regular basis, still it come down to that conclusion. Personally I doubt that 20 rep squats are good for anyone's health who would decide and go to do them year around.

Some will agree with me and some disagree - doesn't matter, I see it this way. I just wanted to give perspective that it's not all about "to get in 15 min of cardio in" but how you lift is at least half of equation
