Gattaca vs Dark City

Both are great films; two different mythic archetypal stories though. Gattaca might be a better film, but I love the gnostic mythos that Dark City emanates from.

Do you know the way to Shell Beach?

I randomly saw a Russian Twitch feed where Gattaca is streamed.

I must've seen Gattaca 100 times from VHS tapes to HBO, Idk why exactly. It's such a classic, GOAT-tier film, such a universal message. So many themes like Eugenics and Imposter syndrome other movies can't tackle properly.

Uma Thurman is so hot. This is probably her best role after Pulp Fiction. The Kill Bill movies were just okay.

The part where Jude Law's character has to climb up the stairs with his hands is one of the most heartpounding scenes eva, brilliantly devised and executed.

Ethan Hawke has many awesome performances, this is one of them.

In some ways this movie is more relevant now then it was in 1997.... SpaceX, AI, genetic engineering etc.

Dark City was better for me. Gattaca felt more lifeless, which is probably done on purpose and a bit of the point, but it left me wanting something more.

I haven’t actually seen Dark City so I have no frame of reference to compare them but Gattacca is a great film imo.

Both are 90s scifi films with elements of noir, though dark city leans into it and the aesthetic a bit more.

Plots are overall pretty different. But both executed very well.

I think highly of both films. Personally though I'll say Gattaca syncs up with me a bit more.

Which do you prefer.
Dark city was good. Never saw Gattaca though.

Always enjoyed Dark City. Have seen Gattaca once ages ago and all I remember was it being fucking boring. Sounds like I might need to give it a proper go some day.

You should watch it. Ebert rated it his #1 movie in 1998. Not at all the kind of film you'd expect a critic to put at the top of the year, either.

It's free on Tubi:

Random only mildly related trivia. The only times Siskel and Ebert both ranked the same film #1 for the year (1967-1998):
  • Z (1969)
  • The Godfather (1972)
  • Nashville (1975)
  • The Right Stuff (1983)
  • Do the Right Thing (1989)
  • Goodfellas (1990)
  • Schindler's List (1993)
  • Hoop Dreams (1994)

Gattaca better movie, but i prefer Dark City

Gattaca is getting some love here?

i don't recall it being super-popular or critically-acclaimed at the time, I guess I thought it was decent but it didn't blow me away, is it one that's grown with the years, or did I (or the critics) just miss something?

It got a ton of critical acclaim, but it wasn't a box office success. IIRC, the media world was surprised that it got pretty much snubbed across the board at the major awards ceremonies considering all that buzz it enjoyed all year long from critics. I vaguely remember that being the hot topic on one of the daytime morning shows after the Oscar announcements.

It's only gotten better with time.

hmm. i may rewatch. for me as i recall it didn't quite get the balance between high-concept and suspense/thriller right but i was like 20 or something and not that discerning

We loved it so much that we made it a tradition on my high school swim team to have a carb-loading spaghetti night where we watched it every year before championships.

One of the most inspirational movies of all time.
